As followers of my occaisional Blowfly build thread will know I am now back from the UK and while over there bought the castings for Northumbrian. I have decided that this locomotive will have priority at the moment - being a smaller engine all mistakes are cheaper! I am at the stage on the blowfly of getting it on it's wheels and doing the cylinders. However, I am still very much a beginner and decided that the Northumbrian is a simpler engine. The Blowfly is not on total hold but I really want to get the Northumbrian boiler made and steamed before embarking on the Blowfly boiler. I have already started the machining of some of the Northumbrian parts (photos will follow later - I'm starting this at work!) but one worry I have is that there seems to be no finished Northumbrians out there - does anyone know of one? Hi Pete,
The prototype shown in the ME series was built by a fellow member of the 2 1/2" Gauge Association and I don't think he had any problems. I think there were a few cock ups in the drawings in ME due to errors in copying the original drawings. Have a look on the Model Engineer website as there is a section devoted to Northumbrian.

Thanks for the feedback Baggo. I am aware of the dimensioning errors in the first couple of episodes in ME. I have the corrected plans - which is just as well, there are a few parts on the plans but not in the ME article as well

Have a good read through the posts on ME Forum as it discusses some errors. The frame errors are not in teh Northumbrian section though!! There is also a link I posted there to a build thread on HMEM with good photos of teh boiler build, second one down www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/threads.asp?t=160J

This is very similar to Lion ( between Rocket and Lion ) and they are of the same era , I build two Lions , I sold one lately and the buyer was amazed of what it could do for its size and weight . These engines are unique , easy to transport and fun to operate .I build two in less than a year , one has not been steam tested yet , one day soon , the other one has run on many tracks .I am sure you will enjoy this engine and will be liked by other members of your club .Have fun and good luck .

Hi Shawki,
What gauge was your Lion? Northumbrian is 3 1/2" which is possibly a little light to pull me (120Kg approx)!

Latest addition to my shed. A plastic sleeve from an arts and crafts shop (Jacksons for those in Perth), A1 sized. Keeps my plans easy to read and clean. Also has the additional advantage of keeping the afternoon sun out of my eyes when working on my lathe. I also got a document folio at the same time so I can keep my plans flat and protected in the house. Attachments:

That is very good Pete , unlike you I put the plan on my desk in the workshop (an old small dinning table ) and place tools on it , write on it , by time I finish from the sheet one can hardly read it . I envy your organization . Good luck .
