Sorry Ace. Didn't mean to highjack your thread so I've started my own. I've roughed out a prototype this afternoon to get the making process right and to work out a few sizes. So it will be 'like this' - which will be more in the spirit of things than LBSC's hexagonal blanking plug. Chris

Hi Chris
What gauge is this, I'm new-ish to the loco scene only built stationary stuff before so I am not fully up to speed with the types of gauges yet. (or trains come to think of it).

Gauge of Model. Hi Chris What gauge is this, I'm new-ish to the loco scene only built stationary stuff before so I am not fully up to speed with the types of gauges yet. (or trains come to think of it). 3 1/2" LNER V4 2-6-2 Tender Loco A smaller and lighter version of Green Arrow The V4s shared many features with the V2s including a monobloc casting for the cylinders and the same pony truck design. Only two V4s were built. No. 3401 had a conventional firebox, whilst No. 3402 had the thermic syphon from the original design.

So thats bigger than mine then....... parts are bigger and easier to work on I guess, but parts will cost more ££££ no doubt.

Ironing Out the ProblemsI've started to assemble the cylinders and valve gear and come across a few problems. The Valve Crosshead didn't leave enough space for a Valve Spindle Gland Nut so I had to pick it up again with a DTI and reduce it's diameter and shorten it slightly. It's probably my fault - I'm one for leaving things oversize until I fit them out. A 2 1/2" four jaw chuck came my way recently. I machined a MT2 taper for it to fit in the lathe so it gave me a reason to try it out. I've managed to get a Gland Nut in now. Chris

Looking good so far, I've stopped work on my V2 until I receive some tooling I ordered. I''m fiddling about with my other engine to pass some time. Can I ask where your cylinders.

Ace's unfinished question. Looking good so far, I've stopped work on my V2 until I receive some tooling I ordered. I''m fiddling about with my other engine to pass some time. Can I ask where your cylinders. ace Hello ace. You were probably in a rush last night and didn't finish the sentence. If it was going to be - Can I ask where your cylinders were obtained from. They were supplied by Reeves. Chris

Return Crank and Eccentric Rod. Return crank and Eccentric are almost finished - except for drawfiling and cleaning up, if I can motivate myself to do it! I haven't done it to the drawings - instead I've inserted a small bearing, 10mm OD - 3mm ID. It's taken me ages because I wanted to machine a bearing case with the 3 lugs on it. Chris

Hi Chris Thats great work you've done, have you machined these from stock or are they laser cut parts. I have used a miniture type flap wheel set up on my pillar drill before to get an excellent finish on parts like yours. I found some extra fine wheels that gave me a great finish better than I could have done by draw filing. You need to have a steady hand though, or you may loose that sharp machined finish you have done.

Machined from Stock. ace.. Thanks for the kind words. I machined them from bar stock - it gave me a sense of satisfaction, that's what it's all about! Chris

A request for advice please. I am fabricating a motion bracket which is to be machined after silver soldering the parts together. The parts are held in place before silver soldering with 40 tpi thread, therefore i can open and close the joints by one flat at a time, one turn of each flat of the hexagonal is 4 thou ish. What space do I leave for clearance for the capillary action of easiflo no.2 to penetrate between the surfaces for maximum strength? See photo. Thanks Chris

About 2 thou would be ideal, although it isnt too critical. So, half-a-flat would suffice.

Intresting looking bracket, is this for the V4? and if so where does it sit on the loco.

Motion Brackets. Hello ace, Yes, for the V4. It's this, or these, - I'm not to happy with the Reeves castings that I have used for the Motion Brackets, so I thought I'd have a go at making my own by fabricating them. More parts to be added yet. Right hand side shown - front view and rear view Chris

ace's progress.
Great photos, and very good progress. You must be spending a lot of time in the workshop.

Can I ask how you lined up your cylinders, I am not far off mounting mine but not sure if these need to be at an angle as the plans show the holes in the chassis to be slightly off horizontal with the chassis if that makes any sense.

Correct Cylinder Position. I made up an extra long piston rod that reached the centre of the driving wheel, with a point on the end. I lined up the cylinder for the point to be in line with the driving wheel centre when it is in riding position. ie half way of the suspension travel. My cylinder locating holes are not parallel with the frame because the cylinder bore points at the driving wheel centre. I hope this is making some sense. Chris

I would be in the shop 24/7 if SWMBO would let me. I have managed to spend most of today in the workshop apart from playing taxi for the kids for a few hours.
