Hi i am about to start on a boiler and would like to know what is the best way to pickle the boiler and what is the best acid for the job..
also what strength is best

I use 10% sulphuric acid, with care. I use 5% sulphuric here, but then it's warmer so it acts quicker. If you use sulphuric keep it in a tank outside with a locked lid to keep children and pets out! Russell. |

Just a few quick lines about acid bath solutions. It has not yet been said but it should be pointed out that when mixing a "bath solution" the acid must be added to the water and not the other way about. Matters could be quite nasty otherwise. Years ago I used to use a product called "Drain Free" which was commercially available and contained 95% sulphuric acid. My acid bath was a 40 gallon plastic water butt and I seem to recall that 1 gallon of "Drain Free" was enough. I have done a search but cannot find the product but there are others out there.

OK i should of also asked how long do you pickle for ....
it would seem to me an acid bath of 5-10% would do .......
I have heard that citric acid work well ? Has anyone try-ed it and is it any good i know its food grade acid so it shouldn't be as harmfull.. Your opinion is welcome and looked forward to....

Ive used citric acid on my last 4 boilers . It takes about 24 hours to clean the copper between operations but I dont mind this. It allows me time to think carefully (usually in bed that night) and plan how im going to tackle the next part of the job. It stops you from rushing into it. Also, its completely safe and you can put your hand in it . It doesnt even sting (it might do after a few hours).
A packet costs about 60p from any chemist. Mix in a plastic bucket or keg. But only lasts about a week so buy a few.
They usually ask what I want it for and i say "I have some copper to clean" and that satisfies them . Apparently it is used in the manufacture of illegal drugs or something.

having been involved with drug counseling i can tell you that citric acid is used in the preparation of heroin for injection when heated the acid breaks down the heroin so it can be injected ...... I WOULD SAY >>>>DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME it is bad for you and you'll never get the loco finished ...
