Hi chaps.well its time to letter and line my Pansy. I was thinking of making some water transfers, but the lettering is yellow and the maroon base colour will show through the printed yellow. I have one of the lining tools with little paint pot, but dont think I have the skill needed to letter with this tool. So whats the best way.michael

Doing the lining is not difficult but the lettering takes a great skill to sign write.
There is a however great alternative. Most or the parts suppliers like Polly engineering, Blackgates,Reeves to name three( there are others.) sell water slide transfers in all the best scales and most of the railway companies you can think of.
They are of good quality and worth a look
Regards,
Andrew

i think michael is after something like the following ie London Transport lettering for the pannier tanks owned by the LT www.howesmodels.co.uk/product/LONDON%20TRANSPORT%20lining%20lettering%20and%20numberingunfortunately the wrong scale! there is an excellent book on the LT Panniers by Kirk Martin called 'Red Panniers'. lots of coloured pics and the GWR GA drawing. www.amazon.co.uk/Red-Panniers-Last-Steam-Underground/dp/1899889299as a point of interest the LT maroon is neither 'red' or 'maroon' but a deep chocolately maroon. how do i know? i had some of the paint from Neasden used to re-paint 'Sarah Siddons' in the 1960s! michael, if you use a very bright gloss yellow enamel it should be ok straight onto 'maroon'. you want a luminous yellow. pheonix/precision used to sell this. humbrol gloss yellow enamel 69 unfortunately hasnt got anything like the intensity or brightness required. the Revell range of enamel is better but i dont think they do a gloss yellow enamel of the correct shade. cheers, julian

Hi Michael
I have just had a read through the fox transfers site and they do do commissions. so if it is the LT details your after then give them a call. They are one of the main suppliers to the trade anyway.

Andrew

Hi chaps.thanks for the input.i spend yesterday making transfers.as the transfer was very weak compared to the old airfix ones I remember as a boy, I let them dry for a few hours and then sprayed them with a coat of car lacquer to add a bit of body.i had outlined the path of the lining in yellow to cover the maroon.its a bit of a paint to get the transfers lined up as I did them in sections along the tank side.looks ok better then my painting anyway.just need to figure a way for the writing now.michael

Yellow is an extremely difficult colour to use. We have built one or two winches at work that have been yellow, and in order to covered the undercoat it requires a third topcoat rather than the usual 2. With just the normal 2 you can still see the grey undercoat underneath.

I must say that yellow is a big problem. But there is a lot of it on this loco.michael
