-------- so I put the afternoon to good use and had a go at making my own "Blue Liners'"....ie}--- gauge glasses, not the RN cigarettes !!...................I know it's 'old hat' for the majority of you but for those who haven't done it before here's some photos.......Remember it's 5mm O/D plain glass tube, and my thumbs are 65 years old. I had to re-set the whistle valve as it was over at an angle and fouled the new glass being fitted....And in order to do that the end of the brass valve handle neede to be shortened by approx 2mm !!...Oh well, it was all good fun and took my mind of that vertical wet stuff outside ........ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> .............................................................................................. ..................................................................................................

Hi.i take it that the blue tape goes on the outside.is that correct. As I get older I find that it is getting harder to read the water level. I have started to play around with fitting a low water level buzzer to the water gauge.the buzzers cost around 3 to 4 pounds and are used on fish tanks. Just not figured away to keep the wires from the heat of the firebox.michael

Hi.i take it that the blue tape goes on the outside.is that correct. Yes, absolutely !!...I'm not cross-eyed enough yet to try passing it down the middle of a 3mm hole LoL !!......The last photo shows it ( the prototype) working quite well although it lacks the sophistication of a commercial product....One benefit is that the plain glass tube is much more consistent in circularity than the lined items....I've made a few more for spares...Nothing annoys me more than those owners who turn up at a track--- their loco develops a fault---and they come cadging tools and spares to keep themselves going....

For insulating sleeving you could try this firm stores.ebay.co.uk/hilltopproductsltd?_trksid=p2047675.l2563I bought some teflon tubing from them (1mm OD by 0.5mm bore) and I'm sure it'd be more than suitable as high temperature insulation. I surmise it's probably used as insulation on cooker igniter lines.

Hope you bounce back sooner than I am Alan, I've had five days of it so far. I decided to go for the Kill or Cure approach and dragged my sorry carcase over the Downs for a game of golf yesterday, and a private steam up today. On balance I think it's been a good strategy, no air ambulance or retreat to my bed so I'm pleased I got something out of the days rather than sitting in the chair, lethargic and lost, coughing for England.

Well, I spent to-day in the workshop tidying up some loose ends ( Both loco and bikes) then prepping Polly 2 for some valve re-setting following a grub screw coming loose.....I'm now at the "Tickly-Cough" and throat spasm stage......but I keep taking the tablets Mr Mainwaring !!............

My intention was to join the Llanelli lads for a New Years Day steam up. The forecast was awful so I decided to "have a few" with some friends instead. Of course, the weather proved better than forecast but then I slept late and was way over the limit anyway.

OK, so here's the start of fitting a set of "proper" drain cocks on Cadbury.........As you can see there is a cylinder end cover retaining stud at the bottom centre line, just where the drain cocks will go...So I've had to shorten the stud a little and assist the strength of valve screw fitment by soft-soldering the body into the cyl. block as well................One down and just three to go !!...Also, I thought you guys might like to see the Maxitrak production piston and piston ring ??........ It's rectangular section with a stainless steel expander underneath............. Finally, for those who still aren't sure about these things this is a Bronze block with a Bronze piston and a simple displacement lubricator fitted.... When I removed the front cover there was a lot of condensate BUT a nice fine film of oil, evenly spread...... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I assume that you are going to have a cab operating lever for the drain cocks? I used a 1/8" copper tube with a 22 swg spring wire inside to form a Bowden cable to connect the lever to the drain cocks operating mechanism.
