A common way of lighting minature traction engines is to place a firelighter in the smokebox, This gives sufficient draught to get the fire established. Traction engines are a much different animal to (mainline) locomotives, the tall chimney enables the fire to be kept alive without resorting to a steam blower (the blower valve is at t'other end nest to the chimney)

Hello all------------- I mentioned earlier about possibly lagging the very-much exposed main steam pipe from the regulator to the cylinders......... Can anyone suggest a suitable material to use ??.........I had in mind to wrap a strip of say 1/2" wide around the whole length if possible.............................. .............................................................................................................................

You could buy some of that insulating 'rope' which is made up of stands. They could be unpicked and wound round the pipe like string. I enquired about buying just the cord but they don't sell that. I suppose they want to charge for the added value of what they make it into.

Hmm, that's a thought....... I wonder how small a diameter you can get domestic pipe lagging in ??...................................................Meanwhile, it's got so C-O-L-D out in "A" Shop that I've had to turn the central heating up to full >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Try searching eBay for 'exhaust insulation', I think you could unpick some of the ones there into individual strands.

Thanks guys------that refrigeration idea turned up a couple of suppliers on E-Bay------- am following them up.... Meanwhile here is the new (but temporary) external cold water feed to Cadbury's injector......... I've got some 2" square Brass tube lined - up to make that header tank I mentioned earlier, when this will be modified to feed that instead and a second injector fitted..................................
