This may not fully explain how it all works but at least it gives you a bit of an idea, scroll to the bottom of the page, came across this whilst browsing just now. www.glrkennions.co.uk/model-engineering-steam-locomotive-king-john.htmlI think the timing doesn't sound too bad but it is just a case of getting to the cylinders and having a look, I had similar issue's with my 9f, a guy had re-done the liners and bobbins whilst I was away to help speed things up and when I went to run the loco it would hardly pull me along it was blowing so bad, on inspection the bores were tapered and the bobbins were just sloppy so I wasn't going to waste more money sending it back to someone who clearly couldn't do the work and ended up doing it all myself anyway (hindsight ey!) I went for plain bronze bobbins in bronze liners and it worked fine, could possibly get them slightly tight but will have another look when I get back home in May. Adam

The timing itself sounds ok, but it sounds as though its blowing past the valve bobbins very badly. Boiler off time, get the chassis running well on air.
We have a 5" King in our club, it's owner is on here but hasn't been active for a while, too many other commitments! That we discovered had valve bobbin problems, so much so the driveers side was stuck in the bore and although the gear was working, we discovered that the valve rod was bending in front of the cylinder and the connecting union link was bending outwards, so that cylinder was contributing nothing at all! That's been completely in bits, had new big end bushes, found the eccentric rods had been cut and welded...all sorts of stuff. I'm hopeful it'll be back in steam this year.
If you have access to a rolling road I'd advise getting it on, and trying to get more video of it running, perhaps underneath too. Upload it to Youtube and post a link to hear, much easier to view, and also you'll access the Youtube community and there are a few experts on there too.
