I doubt this would run on hot steam, but it seems it's working well enough on air.

Apparently you can print anything in metal as well. I suppose this is not yet ready for high strength part requirements, but this may revolution how parts will be made in the future. If you think on it, a technology that keeps adding material to create any shape, if it works, looks more sensible than having to remove material from a bigger block. A better one: Probably very expensive as it is a slow process, but interesting nonetheless EDIT: And eventually found a company in Catalonia doing it as a service: www.pantur.es/03-06-ENG-DMLS-Direct-Metal-Laser-Sintering.htmlNow, how cool is that?

Hi Joan,
Yes, 3D metal printing has been around for some time but it's VERY expensive! A friend got a quote for a 3D printed locomotive wheel in steel (3.375" dia.) just to see what it would cost - £380 per wheel!

My late Uncle Stan was one of the early Engineers with a certain Mr.Laslo Biro ( of Biro pens fame..) at his factory alongside the Miles Aircraft establishment, Woodley Aerodrome, Reading, Berks...........Extemely expensive back in the 1950's but now a multi-pack disposable item for a few pence !!.............................. Give it time lads, give it time... Incidentally I see that Machine Mart are now advertising 3-D printers ( www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/search/filter/3d-printing/type/any/module/shopcategory/page/1 ).......

As Alan says, give it time. Prices are already dropping on good machines. In a couple of years I would guess that an excellent quality machine will be no more money than a good lathe or mill ($1500 to 2500.00) and many home shops will have one.

and as Joan says putting material ON instead of removing it to create something is much more efficient.... Sorry Roger but your "Parts on a Stick" system is DOOMED laddie, Aye !!.... ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7RIgs3eygo ) ....
