Just need some more 3.5 fittings to add to your repertoire... ;-)

I will most likely be ordering some in the future. I'm also tempted with the Timken Axle Box Covers. I'll try to make it all one order if I can.

Just picked up this thread. Wow. Your fittings are great. I have not read all the posts, how have you got the scale correct for the fittings. I have a Winson Britannia and the fittings are dire. I have looked at the ones commercially on offer at steam workshop (Doug Hewson) but there a small fortune. I would like to make my own or rather get the guys at work to cnc them for me 😉

Brian,
Glad you like it, sadly my thread has been ruined by a hit of Photobucket and also an error with my Flickr account so it has lost a lot of its photos which isn't great! I'll build it all back up again in time.
If you'd like to know more about Anthing feel fee to get in touch, the guys at steam workshop are starting to sell some of our stuff as we develop it but hopefully our prices are suitable for most of the ME community.

Hi Adam,
Thank you for the reply. I will indeed get in touch if I have any questions. Thank you for the offer.
I am going to Doncaster next week and hopefully there will be some bits and pieces to be had to improve the look of the engine
Regards
Brian

A very quick update whilst at work as a 5 minute distraction from the chaos....More photos than text as thats easy for now. Its all about brake valves! Gresham & Craven Mk6 on the go for our very own Don and his lovely 9f. Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr Next up is a set of 3 LMS style Vacuum brake valves, full size these are combination valves which started my adventure into scale castings but these are made as just vacuum brake valves. The small cylinder that fits in the body has a should that sits up against the collet, this allows the outer edge to bend when machining to a small spacer was made to stop this, worked a treat. Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr In other news some castings arrived, I don't think I've shown these before. WhatsApp Image 2019-05-10 at 06.29.38 (1) by Adam Cro, on Flickr WhatsApp Image 2019-05-10 at 06.29.35 by Adam Cro, on Flickr Lastly the B1 is now running but its got a bit of a blow/whistle on the valves so out came the RHS bobbin. Plain with oil grooves, Clupet, CI rings or experiment.....? Wondering if anyone has every tried PTFE style Clupets...... Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr Adam

Once again Adam, thanks for the update about the Mk6....can’t wait to see it for real!
The 9F has been on hold for a while, patiently waiting for this valve and inevitably I’ve been sidetracked with all manner of other things! Once received, I definitely intend fitting it and then the cab and all associated pipework can go back on and preperations made for a steam test.....
Regards Don

No problem Don, i know it's a long overdue and working hard to get it to you at the moment.
Looking forward to seeing it in your cab, more updates soon.

Hi Adam First I thought it’s a good idea to try clupet rings made of ptfe. But how do you get them springy?

I had planned more to use their high expansion to allow them to take up as opposed to them being Springy like a CI ring but on further reflection and a chat last night I think it simply won't work especially with the large slotted ports as they are so I may end up back with the same style bobbins as it has just to suit the bore better.

Adam Absolutely right Adam, slotted ports are going to preclude any kind of ring. I've contemplated PTFE Clupet stype rings, but making them is a real challenge since the material is so soft and malleable. Holding it for machining is really tricky but not impossible. A thin ring held in a 4-axis laser engraver would probably work though. I know someone who has one of those, so maybe one day I'll have a play. If that worked, it would be almost trivial to make them!

Having seen the video produced by The Steam workshop I don't see any great difficulty in producing them? But as you say the large slots in the bore restrict what can be done so back to basic bobbins with grooves I think.

PTFE in a thin section is just very floppy, you have to be able to clamp it well enough to resist the cutting forces. I'm not sure you could do it the same way without some other form of support.

That's part of the experimenting! Also I'm not sure you would have it as thin as a CI ring.

Having just had a look at the liners, two big slots stop any sort of rings and actually the bobbins are almost spot on for size which says to me the blowing is more likely around the liners - damn!

When putting it back it all feels good, I could always make up another pair but it's a chance at wasting some material if it's still not the valves.
Think a fun at Maidstone Sunday is needed pc see how things are. You free?

I feel sure some kind of compensation will be expected on Sunday, and I don't think a trip to Maidstone will cut it I'm afraid.
