every now and then i get asked to overhaul a loco. the chassis and everything else is usually covered in a thick layer of grime. i keep all old toothbrushes and about 2 dozen are required with the aid of a bucket or two of paraffin to clean off all the grime from all the parts. as it is a most unpleasant job it is also one reason why i try to keep my own locos spotlessly clean.
for cleaning the mill, drilling machine, and lathe i use an old domestic vacuum cleaner which avoids the problems mentioned by michael. it also gets used on loco smokeboxes.
cheers, julian

One of my local "cheapie" shops has been selling tooth brushes at 5 for a £1. The quality is poor, but at that price they are useful for cleaning things.
