A professional qualificiation is far different from an honourary degree. Just to clarify, I wasn't having a dig at Curly, I was just having a soap-box moment against honorary academic awards. Polititians and actors do not, generally, score very highly in my table of people that I respect. Steve

if i remember correctly the Institute of Locomotive Engineers was a rather select organisation and had nothing to do with professional qualifications and you could only join/be invited to become a member if you were one of the railway company and loco building firms CMEs and their senior assistants.
J.N.Maskelyne was also an Associate of this august organisation.
cheers, julian

Good to see that the plaque has finally happened - it is long overdue.
Now this is a long shot, but I have in my collection some track from the Polar Route which I rescued (with permission) intending to use it as a test track. I really need a bit more to make it a worthwhile project. I believe that various lengths of the track were given away over the years, so may still be around. Has anyone got any that they would like to dispose of? Please PM if you can help, thanks.
