Hello, I Would go for SG iron, It is much stronger than straight CI, I use it for front axle and front forks for my traction engines, and would use it for loco wheels-the flanges will be much stronger. Albert

Thanks foundry quoted that, any reason? It's the old 17ton sq in grade. Fairly standard material, easy to get. More sophisticated grades more costly to maintain standards, and to be honest, you don't need fantastical material qualities or a model seam engine wheel. I always tyre iron wheels.

As Albert suggests, you could use SG iron, its got a better tensile strength and last time I had any done, it wasn't much more expensive than 250. Downside is, when you machine it, as well as swarf it produces a very fine black dust, gets all over the machine and will get all over the turner as well. I thought it was a bit more prone to the bore 'picking up' when pressing a shaft in, but that might just have been me.

Ordinary cast iron produces the same black dust when you machine it so it's not just a SG thing.

Not as copious as SG iron. I've turned lots of 'grey iron' and I can assure you that SG produces a lot more superfine dust.
