Hi Guys I am just starting to build a super simplex and would appreciate some advice with the choice of materials for the horns and axle boxes, and also the cylinders. I am considering having cast iron horns with gunmetal axle boxes, is this the best combination, and also which is considered the best material for the cylinders, cast iron or gunmetal. Any advice would be much appreciated Thanks Colin Read more: modeleng.proboards.com/thread/10745/super-simplex-materials#ixzz3ef53Jnzo

For me,
iron cylinders, always.
iron axleboxes, always.
Horns, well depends a little on the design, they can be either. I had castings made for my MW but they're such a simple design they could easily be milled from steel bar - another time that's what I'd do.
Next build I do that doesn't have room for roller bearings, I'll be using the the hardened inner sleeves for roller bearings on the axles, but still using plain iron axleboxes.

The only thing against CI cylinders is rust. Yes, this can be avoided, but searching the Forums will reveal that seized pistons do happen. If you make the cylinders from solid bar, there's little difference in the cost of the raw materials.

Hello, I have been building and running loco's and T/E for over 50 years, all had cast iron cylinders and never had a rusty bore or seized piston, get the lubricator delivering reliably the correct amount of good quality oil (do not try to deliver the least possible oil--it is cheaper than repairs).

I may be wrong, but with regards to your horns and axle boxes I would suggest cast iron axle boxes with gun metal horns as the best combination, since most of the wear will be present in the bores of your axle boxes whereas the horns are only a rubbing face. I`ve used gun metal for both horns and axle boxes on my build, but then at the rate mine is going wear factors will probably not be a concern in my lifetime! Regards Tim.
