A couple of days ago, actually. After many years (30??) of service, the flat drive belt on my old Drummond finally gave up the ghost. A replacement was duly ordered and delivered, and I had enough 'alligator' clip to join it up. See if this one lasts so long. I had a similar arrangement on my old Southbend Lathe, but I was never happy with the amount of torque it would give without slipping. I ended up putting grooves in the flat pulleys to take a Poly-Vee belt and never looked back.

I know what you mean, Roger, but I quite like the flat belt, for several reasons.
I love the 'click, click' as the pulleys go round, and the fact that the belt can slip is sometimes an advantage. It teaches you to keep your tools sharp, and in the event of an unforeseen incident (parting tool dig-in springs to mind), it makes sure nothing gets too badly damaged.
Of course, in my workshop, if I have to take 5 x 10 thou cuts rather than 1 x 50 thou, I don't worry, as I have plenty of time. In your situation, I can see that is more important.

I got pulled over by the law today for no road tax. My van was impounded and I have now sorted it out and got it home again. The garage I bought it from didn't inform DVLA that i was the owner and I have not been getting reminders. No excuse I know. Just giving a heads up to check your renewals. Pete. The garage should never have allowed you to drive the vehicle away without checking tax and insurance

Tax and 3rd party insurance should be put on the cost of fuel, that way everyone pays their tax and insurance, no reminders needed, and the more you use the roads the more you pay, so much more fair. however it would put a lot of civil servants out of work, so it will never come to pass!!!
best wishes

Yesterday I got a blinder of a Migraine. These are rare for me but usually come at very bad times. In this case I was co-driving a rally car on the Brands Hatch Winter Stages. Lucky for me my driver has been racing at Brands for 15 years and at least knows the track sections very well, even if we were a bit more adrift in the muddy bits. Got a 2nd in class, I think 24th overall. Not bad when the Co-driver is barely speaking and just trying not to be sick in his helmet. It was a bad enough migraine I lost a lot of vision in my right eye.

I spent some time looking for air leaks in the mill power draw bar system. The not-at-all silent compressor I bought goes off very frequently at the moment.
I found some leaks and hopefully fixed them by taking the threaded part out and smearing some Loctite 567 thread sealant on and doing up tighter than they were. Two fittings on the outlet of the air dryer/oiler and some fittings on the air cylinders were obvious easy to find, although soapy water didn't show two of them.
There is still air leaking out of the solenoid fittings but I'll get to them another day.
Most of the fittings came with hardened white stuff on them that made them so hard to do up so I was reluctant to put too much torque into it originally.
I also started measuring up where I need to drill holes in an adapter plate to mount the misting nozzle that arrived a couple of weeks ago. The mill head has two threaded holes in it where the flood coolant mounts so that's convenient.

Hello everyone, First, turn up some extra tooling for the 10 Ton bench press}------------> ---------> Next, I needed to modify a 5MT dead centre such that it would fit into my Chester Craftsman lathe headstock}---------> -----------> and then check 3 Simplex wheelsets for run - out following the fitting of axle-centre oiling points..-------------> ---------> 4 out of 6 were within 5 thou run - out --- the other 2 exceeded that so it'll be some turning between centres sometime soon... I took my newly aquired Kawasaki ZZR1400 to have the ECU set up to the after market silencers that the previous owner had fitted. I had a phone call this afternoon to say the first dyno run it was running rich and maxed out at 60BHP, it should be in the region of 180-200BHP

Todays job was cutting out a 3 5/8" dia circle in the circular backhead for Locomotion's boiler, to take the end of the firebox.
Chain drilled and sidecut chisel, it didn't take long, now just to clean up with a 14" half round file. No CNC here I'm afraid.
This followed on a boring morning session cleaning up the tender wheel spokes, well one wheel anyway. Very boring, but at least theres only 4 of them, and 4 loco wheels. Alans got 8 to do for Great Bear's tender plus another 12 assorted wheels for the loco.

Quote}---- " Alans got 8 to do for Great Bear's tender plus another 12 assorted wheels for the loco".......Listen carefully and you can hear a grown man crying --- LoL !!
Actually the tally to date is}----
To be fettled and painted =
The Bear}---8 wheels for the Tender, 6 main drivers, 2 loco radial truck ( Wheels not yet on axle )... Total is}--- 16 ( Loco bogie wheel sets completed )..
Simplex }---- To be fettled = 4 wheels
To be painted = 6 wheels.

I have got my horses back, the secondary throttle butterflies were gummed up and wouldn't open. A quick spray with carb cleaner and all is well 197 BHP at the rear wheel and up to another 10BHP from ram air

I spent some money today, I blame windows 10, the last critical update has caused my old GeForce graphic card to stop working, the new driver just won't work , nor will any of the old drivers. This is a major problem as I can't see the screen properly, it's stretched which makes life a little problematic when trying to view pictures and I hate low resolution. It also caused a game that I've been involved with since 'Alpha' testing to stop working all together as the motherboard integrated graphics won't run the game. So I needed to do something and it was my wife who suggested that I buy a new laptop, there's an ulterior motive here as I had just moved the computer upstairs onto the landing as a new suite that we bought meant there was no room for the PC in the front room. Knowing how much time I spend on the computer she was worried about becoming a PC widow...lol So, today I got my new laptop, the old PC which was top of the range when bought was nearly 15 years old and the difference in graphics is astounding. The new laptop is mid range but good enough for my needs, I tried the game and wow what a difference, not just in look but in gameplay too, everything is so much faster. I'm an old hand at naval warfare games but when using the new laptop I had trouble in the first game hitting the target, leading it far too much, it then dawned on me that everything was moving so much quicker including the shells which now had a much shorter flight time, I still haven't grasped how this is possible but I've seen it with my own eyes, the game is so much easier to play now once I had adjusted from the old motion times. Anyway, here's a picture of HMS Cossack just about to play, it was a great game, had the highest score and sunk 4 ships myself, that used to be a rare thing, I suspect it's going to be the norm now.....oh and it's raining in the picture, a storm was just beginning... BTW, If anyone here is into naval warfare/history, this is the game for you, 'World Of Warships' Pete

------and I think that was one of my first Airfix kits as well....
Looking at the angle that A and B turrets are rotated to, I hope the guys on the Bridge are wearing their anti-flash hoods and ear defenders !!..........You might end up like Uncle Albert on Fools and Horses by sinking your own ships ---LoL !!

------and I think that was one of my first Airfix kits as well.... Same here, I also built the Airfix Cossack at an early age...my father built a 1/96th R/C model of her too...it was left to my eldest son on his passing. I have mentioned before my own interest in RN warships...this goes back long before my interest in steam. I have built many such models..currently building HMS Hood in 1/200th...it's a kit, first kit I've bought in decades, I suspect the same kit as the picture that Dan has shared from Ally Pally. The model looks like it's built 'out off the box'...there is an excellent after market brass etch kit for it...I did post pictures of this kit before..might be in my build thread. That Trumpeter kit with the Pontos etch kit makes the most accurate model of HMS Hood ever made....one of the reasons why I spent a small fortune 12 months ago buying it. I highly recommend it to snyone wanting to build the 'Mighty Hood'..

Could turrets on the real ship go that far around?
A 15 year old PC is really something. I thought I'd done well with mine that was about 10 years old.
