Hello John--------Same with us in the Royal Navy for Engine Room Artificer grade back in the 1960's/70's...........
About 10 years ago--ie}--just before my retirement, as an Apprentice Master at ABRO Donnington I "inherited" a Year 2 Apprentice fresh from the in-house Training Wing who couldn't read a Metric micrometer....The Training Wing had been semi-Privatised and was "Dumbing-Down" in order to get the desired results and qualify for their next year's funding !!!.......Needless to say I gave up a couple of Dinner breaks to give him some 1 to 1 training and he went on to pass the section I was involved with }--- One person TN15 Gearbox Base Overhaul...in 50 hrs.
I agree entirely with your sentiments in this instance.........Good luck with that Stirling 8ft Single final build..

Alan That wouldn't be the Steve Milnes who used to work for Shropshire County Council in the 1980s and who then (may still do) owned a steam roller, would it? He'd be in his 70s by now. How on earth did you avoid the rain, I thought it was pretty universal across the Midlands last night. The very same chap !!........ He, and Rosemary are well known figures within the Traction Engine world and the Northern / Midland Federation clubs..........For many years Rosemary used to organise the Model Engineers tent within the main Shrewsbury Traction Engine Rally.......Yes, he still has that roller and recently had a new crown wheel ( is that the correct term ?) made and fitted to replace the old, cracked one.... As part of the amalgamation between the old Oswestry club and Shrewsbury club he became the Deputy Chairman and is on the Boiler Testers' Register......Fred Newall is in the Chair with Glyn Davies as General Secretary and myself as Treasurer......... How did we avoid the rain ??----------- Well, the Clubhouse and track is situated within the Oswestry Main Showground itself and is in a slight reduction in the ground level and part surrounded by high trees....This, coupled with the greater area land topography seems to have created a sort of Bermuda Triangle effect in as much that for the greater majority of the time any heavy weather seems to swing around and by-pass us in general............Several times on a work Tuesday we've sat in the clubhouse watching the main thunderstorm in the near distance whilst only a light rain squall would actually fall on us.... However---------- this is very much still the Welsh Boarderland countryside ,where some small remote villages have only just received gas lighting ( so you can apply that Blue woad paint !! )......ghostly spirits lurk in dark, damp woodlands and Owain Glendower still rides along the misty hilltops........... So it must be by Magic then !!!!! Having moved to Telford from "Dahrn Sarff" ie as a Suvvunner I'm inclined to believe the latter...LoL !! Cheers Alan

Alan He probably won't remember me, but I knew him briefly about 1986-1988 when I was working for Shropshire County Council myself, supervising the construction of bridges and retaining walls on the Reabrook Roundabout to Telford Way Link Road. If you know Shrewsbury, its the road with the big brick retaining walls running past the Lord Hill Hotel. Some of it ran on the line of the old 'Potts' railway, the cutting of which had been filled with domestic refuse in the 1950s, and we had to dig it all out again and dispose of it properly this time. Steve wasn't part of the site team, but he did work in the Highways department which is where I met him. He may have gone to the same engineering evening class which I did in the well equipped workshop of the local Tech College. At the time I was driving a 1960 Series 2 Landrover, into which a previous owner had transplanted a Perkins 4203 diesel engine - you could hear it coming for miles.

Tonight I modified a mini moto front sprocket to fit my little motor for the shunter. Astonishing little motor, 3100 watts and the size of a can of red bull. Water cooled too. Sounds interesting, do you have the make / model of the motor?
Tim
It is a turnigy aquastar 4084-1050 brushless motor running through a 160A Water cooled speed controller. It's quite expensive but I seem to recall I didn't pay anywhere near what they go for new. I used it in my boat which was drastically, stupidly over powered.

Forgot our anniversary today. Isn't she gloating. She normally forgets and I do the gloating. I went to my Speed Awareness Training yesterday. Some food for thought on the statistics they produced and I realised my van is limited to 50mph on single carriageways, not the 60 I have been doing. I found the classroom environment quite tough in terms of noise and vision. Having gone 47 years without a ticket I wonder if I can see my time out without a second one. Off to Llanelli's Steam Gala at Pembrey Country Park for a run with the Holmside today. Pete. Hi Pete, I hope this link works}----- www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/legal/speed-limits/ ----- Well I never knew that 50 mph law existed......how ludicrous........... why can't you all do 60 ??

I was surprised too, when driving a hired van to pick up my lathe, and being told by my co-driver to slow down! He, being an HGV driver, knew all the rules.

Ian The main problem with the Locomotion boiler, doing it my way with blind bushes, unless you are a CNC whizz which I'm not, is that you have to make all the fiddly bits which fit on the boiler first, to make sure the holes for the bushes go in the right place! The firebox is a tube, but there is a flat about 2" x 2" under the rear cylinder, to give clearance for the cylinder end. Richard Thanks Richard for this information - I obviously need to give this some more thought. Blind bushes seem the right way to go despite the extra work that comes from that - I'd thought about them for the axles but not anything else. With everything I've got on maybe this winter is a bit ambitious for the boiler. Ian

Today I repaired my garden fence for the second time where a badger has decided to wander through our back garden and smash its way through the fence for access. If it continues there may well be a surplus of shaving brushes in the Sheffield area. 😡

Hello Alan, I have already put a handy little chart on my dashboard. I can only do 60 on a dual carriageway too. Not too bothered as I rarely go above 60 but it is surprising how much you think you know only to be shot down in flames! Pete.

I have not come across a water cooled mtor controller before - must be interesting if it leaks

Boiler work suspended at the moment - weather insufficiently clement for working at the outside hearth, gas bottle needs refill before another major heat, flux running low, 38% solder running low - saving up for big order to Mr Cupalloy for enough 38% and 55% solder plus flux to finish boiler.
Yesterday worked on a long term project, restoring a 4" Roundbed Drummond remember these? Its 1936, unusual because its the long bed version and someone many years ago fitted it with backgear which the factory never fitted. Its been stripped right down, cleaned, painted and largely reassembled, but I'm upgrading it so its now got an ML7 tailstock barrel to take 2MT tooling instead of the original 1MT, and a new spindle with ML7 sized nose so it will take standard Myford chucks, faceplate etc, plus 2MT again, roller thrust washers to spindle and to the leadscrew. As standard, Drummond supplied gears to cut metric and imperial threads, so it should be quite a useful machine. Yesterdays task was to fit a new sunk key to the spindle for the large backgear (bull wheel). Took my time, easing it with warding files, but eventually got a good tight fit into the shaft, and a good stiff fit to the gear. Well pleased. I'm thinking of drilling a ring of holes for indexing purposes in the face of the gear, I'm thinking of 60 because that gives 2,4,5,6,10,12,15,20 and 30. anybody think of a more useful number? There probably isn't room for more than 2 rings of holes. The gear itself is 68T which isn't that useful for indexing, though I suppose it gives 2,4 17,and 34.

I have an index feature by a locking pin with 60 divisions on the large gear on my Atlas and it is so useful. If you can fit another set of holes just add for doing 8. That way you have lots of options which cover 90 percent of requirements.

This week back in the UK I have been tackling the overgrown garden to rediscover the 5" garden railway built 30 years ago and abandoned to nature for the last 10. Out of the undergrowth appeared the passenger trolley which had been covered by a plastic tablecloth. The chipboard end panel has rotted but to my surprise the bogies still ran perfectly. Next find will be an aircraft fuselage which is hidden right in the corner.

I actually don't mind going at 50, just glad I know this is the limit. Pete.

Peter, Were there any 'gems' quoted on your SAC
I had two
Whenever SLOW is painted on the road it is where someone got killed
AND
only four signposts are mandatory. these being
Roundabout Level Crossing Low Bridge School
ALL the other are only put up after someone has been KSI.
I did wanted to ask if that was correct, as near me a new 'by pass' had just been opened and there were lots of 'Junction' signs.'wild animal' etc already erected.
BUT as we were told at the beginning of the course that any smart answers etc would result in dimissal and the points/fine applied i just kept schtum and wrote to the AA ( who ran the course) commenting on these statements. I got a reply that the person concerned was being 'retrained'.

If you want the correct answers to these and other questions you need to read the Traffic Signs Manual, the definitive work on the subject. Its massive and very hard work.
