That does look a handy bit of kit Pete. I must see if the equivalent is available out here, to date though I can't recall seeing one as neat as that being advertised by the usual suppliers.

john helps (johnthepump) very kindly guillotined up the brass sheet for the tanks of my first loco (5"g Railmotor) and then bent them up for me. saved me an enormous amount of work! john is one of those rare individuals in ME who spend more time helping others than on his own projects! cheers, julian Hi Julian, Back in those days I owned a 6 foot powered guillotine and a 6 foot folder, but you can't keep everything when you retire. Your are right I have spent years helping other and now the chaps have said it time to get on with my own loco. So Ajax went out of the Pumphouse I started in earnest. Mind you on Tuesday evening we are working on the Secretary's B1 Cylinders, Pistons and rings. When his new boiler comes for the loco I have no doubt that I will have to HELP with that. It must be my surname, I just have to help. Regards John.

hi john,
do you also remember when i trotted over to Godshill one wednesday evening with the front smokebox flame cut plate Don Young gave me for the Railmotor? and you very kindly allowed me to use your rotary table to mill it out?
as per Arthur Grimmett, nothing was too much trouble, and if it could be done it was done!
always very grateful for your help and instruction all those years ago!
cheers, julian

I was certainly fortunate enough to have met somebody as selfless as John who offered help and guidance to me when I first got involved in the hobby. There were other 'know alls' who were adamant that their's was the only way but one soon discovered the trail of botched projects they left behind and with barely an apology to boot. My mentor explained the why's and wherefores and importantly let me make mistakes not serious ones, but enough for me to discover and learn from.

Jim well said Julian and Jim...I would add something to this, yes I have met some helpful folk at my own club but nearly all of what I have learnt since starting in live steam has come from you guys here. I read most of what's written and pick up bits and pieces from just about everyone...without this forum and the people on it I very much doubt that I would have achieved what I have to date and I certainly wouldn't have the understanding of steam locomotives that I do today. So a big thank you to you all....cheers Pete

Over the 25 Years that I have opened my workshop to model engineers there have been lots of visitors, including Bob Symes he was a real gentleman . The Pumphouse has now just exceed the Waterhole by a few months and is still going. Regards John.

Thanks for this Phil. Just ordered a length of 1/4 by 1/4 by 500 long. Approx £10. No problem with that - went to checkout. PLUS £7.50p FOR POSTAGE.

I'm not surprised. To make something as fragile as a 500mm length of 1/4"x1/4" angle robust enough to withstand couriers, carriers or posties needs a fair amount of packaging, all of which has to be paid for.
