Thanks fore the report Mike. Keep us informed on how you get on with it. I think a lot are VERY interested in the outcome!

Any news Mike?
Did you have Argon in use on your first try? To me it looks like you didn't? The splash marks suggest not?

No argon as yet. That was a play around straight out of the box. Progress reports may be a bit slow, I'm on with other things at the moment and of course doing things I enjoy so much in the garden. ☹️

Afternoon all,
Been and gone and done it! Ordered one of the units, same as Barloworks.
Should arrive by the end of the week, if so I'll try it out and report back.

Good on you Waggy. At least when I cock it up I'll know it's my own ineptitude. 🙂

Good morning all,
New toy arrived yesterday teatime, not had a look in the box yet though, club meeting last night. We're going on holiday early Monday so might not get much chance to try it out? SWMBO will no doubt apply domestic pressure to attend to other matters!

Hi everybody
I've posted more information on my trials with the welder in the latest update of my thread "It started with a Buffer".

Hi Kelly, I think there may be some confusion about this thread. The micro tig welders are intended for use in the jewelry trade and this thread was intended to explore their use in our hobby. I have now fitted argon to the unit but to be honest it does not make much difference. Waggy had a good idea when I met him at Doncaster, to connect the argon directly and fit a stop tap to feed the argon when I need it. More experimentation needed but I'm bridge building at the moment.

Good evening all,
Just to expand on Mike’s post above.
I found that the spark fires as soon as the pedal is depressed which I think doesn’t allow time for the argon to flood the job when it’s fed via the torch?
Perhaps the separate gas supply might work as the gas will be present as the spark fires?
I must find time to try it out.

This is one of many reasons to choose a fully digital controller because all of those things can be set. Mine has nine presets so you don't have to keep fiddling with them. You can set the pre and post flow which is really handy if you're using a tee and separate supply of Argon for back filling.

I don't know what the difference is but there is a massive difference in prices on Ebay. Some microwelders are as much as £3k but I found quite a few that start at £109. This is the £109 one:- Led Micro-Computer Pulse Battery Charger & Spot Welder 787A+ 0.1 -0.15 Mm 15 cm. What the difference is I don't know, or whether they even do the same job. Anyone any ideas?

The little ones look like they're for soldering battery connections, so very thin material (0.15mm), and not really "welding" at all.

Hi Bob, I would imagine it's a case of you get what you pay for. The higher price range are professional units for professional jewellers, the lower end are Chinese knockoffs of varying quality. You can see the unit I opted for on my build thread. It is the one with the Argon connection but so far that has not made much difference (see Waggy's post for further ideas on that). The idea of micro tig welding is it gives one pulse when the foot peddle is pressed. It is not a tig welder. My idea was to hold parts together for silver soldering using micro tig welds rather than making up holding jigs, to which I have had some success though I cannot as yet get it to weld steel. As Waggy says, more experimentation required.
