Hi Q. You are in luck! The top surface of the splashes should be light green. Bob. Brilliant, thanks Bob, I had already decided that Black was just wrong! Thanks once more for your invaluable feedback . Cheers Q

Hi Q.
PM me your email address. I found my file of the Livery Data Sheet, which has all the diagrams, I produced when I had Phoenix Paints. I'll email you a copy.
Bob.

Hi, Second time trying to post something with pics, now using the app instead of the website. I have not been asleep but slowly making progress bedevilled with misalingments, snapped bolts, and reassembly sequences. So getting there slowly whilst the weather holds, lining in still a huge problem, which will get worse with the splashes, however hopefully a couple of iPhone pics showing where I am. Soothing ale time again Cheers Q

Hi Q. Bet you don't know where I got the sample of GNR Stirling Loco Green from, when I produced it for Precision Paints. In the early days before the NRM was built, all the locos were stored in a large railway warehouse next to York railway station. I was given clearance by David Jenkinson, the then Curator, to get into the warehouse to research colours for the NRM, and Precision. When I got around to the Stirling, I wanted to check the colour between the frames, so a crawl underneath was necessary. At that time, she was painted in very cracked L.N.E.R. Doncaster Loco Green. When I had done my checking into the between-frames colours, as I turned around I happened to catch sight of a lighter patch on the back of the left hand main driver, just level with the narrowish part of the frames...not easily seen. It was about 6" long, along the inner rim of the main driver that looked as if it had been missed when the loco was last painted because it was impossible to get a paint brush in to paint the area of the patch unless the loco was moved. I had no idea if it was an undercoat or primer, or anything else, but as it was on the loco I decided I should colour match it. A few weeks later I was talking to the colour matching dept of a well known paint manufacturer that used to supply many of the railway companies, and they offered me samples of the old colours for preservation, as the railway companies were no longer in existence, and they hadn't supplied any of the colours for many years. One of the panels they sent me was marked up as G.N.R. Locomotive Green. It was an exact match for the colour I had matched on the Stirling, at York.

Bob,
Fascinating story, I am really curious how you managed to sample the colours so accurately during your detective work? I’m now so disgusted with my lining attempts that I have just discovered a thread through Facebook about a guy making a lining pen using blunt syringe needles which look like an interesting distraction as I’ve wasted a couple of days making a scalpel holder to cut masking tape to allow me to create a clean line for the lining of the holes in the splashers - fail as I can’t get the blades to cut cleanly....more soothing ales. Cheer’s

I think I know the problem - have the soothing ales first to steady the nerves

Oh no! You've given away my secret Pete. I must admit though a couple of soothing ales will correct any wobbly line.
Jim.

And if you have enough the color won't matter until the next day. Jason

Hi, Not asleep, but cab finished and trying to get the main splashers and running boards done after much help from Barloworks but the weather and urgent domestic chores have got in the way. As an aside I have been searching for a copy of Boddy and Leech book on the singles and failed miserably BUT did find a reference to the GNR by NGroves and managed to get a decent copy of volume two which covers The Stirling era from 1867 - 95 interesting stuff but naturally only covers general topics regarding the single.
Bedtime reading 😀

Pete, Those are the ones I found as well! The amazon one is completely OTT and the Oxfam listing is just frustrating, I found one in Oregon near Seattle where number 1 son lives but again it’s about 100 bucks. Anyway the GNR one is an interesting read with lots of pictures😀. Silver fox, what is the RCTS series?
Cheers

Midland,
Not at all sure how to reply to your message, I have certainly had an awful lot of help from many people here as I have stumbled along on my 10 year journey - I’m not a steam railway buff, or even an enthusiast but I have loved the single since I was a teenager and bought a print of one in side elevation - don’t know what happened to that print! Yes I would adore the book but can’t in all conscience accept it as a gift, just too much - on the other hand, coming from Aberdeen.......!
Cheers
