Is there anyone in this forum building a Don Young Black 5?
If so, perhaps it might be appropriate to start a Black 5 section.
I just received the wheel and cylinder castings today from Reeves and will be making a start between the finishing bits for the Simplex I am also building.
Having scanned the plans and Don's description of how to do it, suggestions, pictures and whatever from you much better informed guys would be much appreciated.
Incidentally, one of the cylinder castings has a nasty little sand hole which might be impinging on the cylinder valve hole. I spoke to Reeves today, and they are willing to replace it and refund return postage (even from Malaysia) - excellent service!

They are good in that way , I had parts replaced free of charge and I am in Australia.

Since people on this forum seem to get more interested if a picture is posted, here's a shot of the wheels and cylinders.

I've got a set of drawings and the wheel castings but I don't know when I'll make a start though - too many other projects! I'll be interested to follow your progress. Incidentally, Model Engineers Laser do a lot of laser cut parts for the Black Five at reasonable prices. I'll probably get a set of frames from them to save a bit of time.

Lucky you Baggo - postage to Malaysia is penal - cost me 180 quid postage for the wheels! But then again, come the frames, hacking and filing makes it all the more rewarding.
And Shawki - did you get my pm?

And then again, John / baggo, when I showed some pictures of what I was up to, to one of my metal suppliers, a fat little chinaman said " I have a mate who will make that for you for the right price" - I responded - " I have a neighbour who will have sex with your wife if you pay him ..... the fun is in the doing!!"

I'm just wondering whether to make the Don Young Black Five my next project. I assume from the small number of replies to this thread that not many people are building one, surely that can't be correct?!
Before I start though I would like to read the original articles, but which publication were they in, and when?

Hi David,
I'm gradually collecting castings etc. and hope to embark on construction in a year or so (too many other projects to finish first!)
The construction series was in LLAS (Locomotives Large and Small), an excellent magazine which ceased publication on Don's death. I have the Black Five series all scanned and on file and can send them to you if you wish.

There are two being built in my club the guys both started them at the same time so if they came across any problems each new what they were talking about. One has just been painted the other is very near completion and will need painting I shall see the guys this weekend and take some pictures to post here. I do remember the chap who has painted his remarking on the (very poor drawings) and he is one of our best model engineers in our club.

I have also been told that there are quite a few errors on the drawings. It will probably be a case of redrawing them in CAD and fitting the bits together on the PC first!
I shall be building 4767 with the outside Stephenson valve gear (just to be different ;D )

Just an idea!

I think they should be kept. An earlier incarnation of this board had a whole load of information about the original Winson models that has now been lost. The simple fact that Sation Road Steam have just sold a 7.25" Brit and a 5" 9F supports this.

Hi,
Definately dont scrap the winson / modelworks threads. I have two of their engines and the and the information I have gained off of the boards so far has been outstanding. Without you guys my understanding of the 14XX and all its problem (many) would have not got me past stripping it, but due to the help of you guys I am quite away along the quest of turning this engine around!!!!!
Thanks
J.

I agree that all info on this forum should be kept. There's a wealth of information in the posts here which is always going to be of use to someone, especially newcomers to the hobby.
It would be nice to have a section devoted to various designs so that members could exchange ideas and post problems and errors they have found during construction. The problem though is that there is a huge number of designs available and things could perhaps get a bit unwieldy?

Brilliant, thanks everyone for replying.
spamcanman - I was going to ask around next time I was at Finchley, I just couldn't wait!
baggo - I've never heard of LLAS, where was it published? Thanks very much for the offer of the copies of the series, yes please.
I note the comments about errors in the drawings, can anyone be more specific please.

Hi David,
I'll get them off to you.
I think Don himself published LLAS and I think it was probably subscription only? The first issue appeared in November 1979 and then appeared quarterly until May 1994 (59 issues). Fortunately, I managed to build up a complete set over a year or so from Ebay. Copies still appear occasionally.
I can't be specific about the drawing errors yet. Apparently there is a chap in our club who knows about them but I haven't had chance to talk to him. I will probably produce a set of drawings in CAD based on the originals and hopefully will find any errors before starting to build. I do this for all the designs I intend to build. I have already drawn out the frames and a few other bits as I was looking into scaling it down to 2½"

I am currently building a black5 in G1 , scaled from a mixture of both Don Youngs and Martin Evans drawings. I am hoping to produce in kit form eventually. If there is enough interest I could supply some of the more detailed parts as castings for 5" gauge.
