I'm looking for spring buffers for a 4" scale Hunslet. I have the engine sold and the buyer wants buffers. I found some 10 1/4" gauge ones at PNP Railway but i'm not sure if they would look right. any ideas? Fred V

Tell him he bought it as it is, and if he wants buffers, fit them himself!

ettingtonliam's advice is perhaps a little blunt, it is probably the best; let them make their own modifications.
However if you really do want to do it for them, maybe get the basic dimensions for the ones you're looking at and make a card mockup to see how they'd look?

I feel the same way; Hunslets didn't use buffers but "Jonathan/Bernstein", which is my builders plate number, had them added in preservation. Fred V

Hi,
Not sure this will help, but I believe that the drawings have wooden buffers, with a steel cover. My friend has made a set of these for their locomotive and I have to say they are very appealing. Looking at photos of Bernstein/Jonathan, the stocks are cylindrical and could be turned from solid or welded/silver soldered up.
Having read the post again, I really assume you are looking for ready made buffers?
Simon.

Malcolm,
The fundamental difference is the gauge, a 4” Hunslet runs on 7.25” gauge track, the 4” relates to the scale of 4” to the foot. A 5” Hunslet runs on 5” gauge and is much smaller than the 3” or 4” versions for 7.25” gauge. I also notice that the page you mention seems to show the pattens for the buffers in the January section, so not quite sure where the O.S. live steam parts actually come from?
Sorry to be awkward,
Simon.

Hello Simon
Not awkward at all.
If you don't ask you never learn.
I guessed that it would be 4"=1foot scale.
I am building a 5" gauge Hunslet to the Don Young design. There is a build diary lurking somewhere on here.
Not too certain about your comment on the OS parts. The information below is a simple "copy" of the table on the OS parts and accessories page.
BUFFER High grade chromium plating, baked paint finish.Kost wax steel casting or steel made. for the KRAUSS (Size)Φ25×44 (Weight)50g 1 for the BRITANIA (Size)Φ26×33 (Weight)60g 1 for the T5 (Size)Φ36×45 (Weight)140g 1 for the BR24(1set)
The Japanese builder was making a 5" gauge Hunslet,so I guess they will be much too small. He did not want the standard(?) wooden buffers.
regards
Malcolm

The 4" Hunslet is a quite large engine; 45" long weighs 500 pounds. I personally like the dumb buffers but i'm trying to satisfy my buyer. Fred V

Ok, I would suggest looking at Reeves talyllyn engines, they all have buffers. But it should be noted that if they follow the prototypes they may not be very suitable due to the shape, style and scale of the buffers.
Good luck,
Simon.
