Hi everyone,
I’m attempting to gather drawings for a set of Walschaerts valve gear for a Sweet Pea. I remember there was an article featured in Model Engineer a few years back, but cannot find the copy for the life of me. Would anyone have the said article, or know a source of suitable drawings?
Best wishes for the new year,
Tom

There was a series in EIM May to Oct 2019, They tested various valve gears for the Sweet Pea. The best results were from a version of "Southern" valve gear which is essentially "Marshall" valve gear rotated 90 deg and operating through a bell crank

They run very smoothly as we had a go behind one at a Sweet Pea Rally! You will have a rare beast!!

Hi Andy,
As much as I like the Marshall gear I already have a Hackworth Sweet Pea and in honesty am looking for a change this time around!
David,
I’ve seen a video of one and it looked to run very well, I’m not sure of the design however. I would be delighted if this one were to run half as nicely!
Kind regards,
Tom

Dad's sweet pea had walchaerts valve gear, which was a significant improvement over hackworth; he never had any drawings for it though, all I know is the guy who did the walchaerts conversion used the Dockstader simulator program to design it.

Hi Lisa,
Great to hear of another success story!
I’ve managed to find which magazine I saw the article in - it was the June 2013 Engineering in Miniature. Would anyone happen to have a copy would be willing to scan, before I contact EIM about back issues?
Kind regards,
Tom

Kind regards, Tom Hi, Tom I may be able to help, subject to a successful scan and being able to attach it to a PM/email/or even snail mail. You may recall that the author, Nigel Thompson, prefaced his article with references to Simon Bowditch's articles June - November 2009. I don't think I will have those but I do have Nigel's of 2013, two and a bit pages with colour photos. Give me a while to revive my old scanner (connected to an old PC!) and I'll let you know how it goes. With luck though you may get other offers. I'll come back to you. Bob

I also have the relevant copies of EIM, so let me know if I can help. I can't scan them until I go back to work next week, though.
Good luck!
Malcolm
