Hi Folks.
Please can anyone help me? I am working on the smokebox door of the loco and have been looking through my photo collection to find a pic of the smokebox door. Somehow I have managed to miss taking a front view in all the times I've been up to the NRM to collect info. The BR works drawing shows the shed plate fitted to a sheet metal bracket, riveted to the outside at the bottom of the door. However, I've seen photos in BR steam days of it with no shed plate, and with a shed plate. The photos with shed plate show it riveted direct to the smokebox, without the mounting plate. I've also seen photos in preservation days, both with and without a plate. I haven't been able to find any photos on the internet either, Does anyone have a photo showing the plate (if there is one) on Evening Star as it is now, as that is how I'm building it?
Bob.

Hi Bob this may not help but....when we restored 92214 it retained its original smokebox door and I have no recollection of any shedplate “bracket”, or evidence of there ever having been such a bracket....just bolt holes. Trouble is that memory sometimes plays tricks but I think the shedplates on 9’s fitted on top of a separate “backplate” that carried the SC letters. The fixings were two nuts & bolts to allow changing shed codes after re-allocations. The SC is not present in Pete’s present day photo of 92220 but may have been in BR days, however if you are modelling as it is now, you wouldn’t need those letters. On my model, the SC is incorporated into the shedplate etching itself but don’t think that’s prototypical. Cheers Don

Hi further to the above....I have trawled through all my 9F books and can summarise as follows:-
The “SC” plate was definitely a separate item but don’t know if it was a casting? The area between the two bolt holes was hollowed out, presumably so it fitted against the curve of the smokebox door better. (Have seen some good photos of these but would need to scan etc.).
9Fs and presumably other classes were often turned out new from Works with these SC plates in place, but no shedplate
There is plenty of photo evidence of:- a) Locos with both SC and a shedplate b) Locos with just a shedplate c) Locos with with neither....particularly towards the end although sometimes they were painted on d) 92220 with no SC plate, even just before it’s naming ceremony or anytime after
No evidence of any other sort of shedplate bracket that I could see
Hope this helps
Don

I honestly thought that photo was of a full size 9F until I spotted the cap head screws on the valve chest... the patina of the paint, and the way the handles are worn to bare metal is spot on. Lovely job.

Hi Malcolm, I haven’t done anything other than leave it covered up for 21 years, but Thanks anyway 👍

Sounds like 21 years covered up in your workshop equates to about 21 days out on the road in service without cleaning!
