Seeing all this John has re-awoken a long held thought to build the model of the Walcha Water Works beam engine. The Bolton version of the castings are still available out here.
Jim.
Loco building experience goes a long way towards what I am doing. Go for it! John

I think I will John. I actually have a set of the ME beam engine drawings and it looks very impressive.

The tower looks great! You make it sound very simple...

I've been quite busy with the tower, pump and associated pipework. It was obvious that the feed pump had never pumped anything as there was no packing in it... It feeds against 50 lb pressure now! There are no obvious leaks at that pressure, but I will get it tested at the club. I intend to put the bits on a tiled surface, so a visit to Topps Tiles is called for! What a transformation. I can't wait to see it running on that boiler with the tiled floor.

I didn't want the base to look like a Freemason's chamber or a chess board, but Topps Tiles didn't have what I wanted, but the nice young man at B&Q was very helpful once I'd shown him the pics. He even discounted the tiles by 80%! They came as a mosaic, joined with mesh, but the gap was too big so |I cut off the mesh and I have just butted them together. I'll put a hockey stick moulding around it when I've glued them down. John 20190228_173936 by inkaboat, on Flickr 20190228_174930 by inkaboat, on Flickr 20190228_194357 by inkaboat, on Flickr

That looks excellent, redolent of a factory floor (in the best way).

John, I dont mean to be a critic but all that lovely work, polished brass and copper, nicely painted boiler and a bit of bent tin holding the manifold up. You simply have to do something with that, even if you paint it! Maybe a nice curved and embossed brass stanchion to hold it up??
Just my thoughts!

I wanted to say the same as Tim, it is so beautiful except for the bit of tin, but did not want to upset anyone, however constructive criticism is good, and a bit of brickwork, or better still brass pillars would make a fine model perfect.
the tiling is fantastic.
best wishes

Well John the bug has really bitten me. Today I ordered the castings for the Bolton No12 Beam Engine which I'm fairly sure is 1.5" to the foot version of the ME Beam Engine. With a 14"diameter fly wheel it's not small.

Jim I have to say that I've had more fun mucking about with my recent projects than I've had in ten years slaving over a detailed locomotive! Good luck with your project: from the sound of it you will be able to couple a small generator to it! John

Now there's a thought John. I could mount it on the rack on the pushbike as motive power for a steam conversion pedal assist bike .

Beam engines are slow running, so I'm not sure of their suitability for dynamo driving without significant gearing up. I was rather taken with the picture of a hot air engine driving a reciprocating potato masher in the report of the Faszination Modellbau Friedrichshafen exhibition, in the current issue of Model Engineer. Ideal for something to be driven by a slow speed beam engine! Or possibly a tilt hammer?

Oil Separator/Condenser Fitted: Plumbing Completed!I just have to etch prime and paint the cylinder, then on with the layout board. My good friend Jez has donated a 1.6" thick walnut worktop to use as a base, so I have to rebate that before I tile it. I found these rather lovely cast elbows after watching a Keith Appleton video. Not cheap, but they look very 'steam enginish'! All the pipes will be lagged and painted white: right at the end... Well pleased, and I'm already redesigning the manifold mount...
