Sorry, I don't think that it looks substantial enough when compared with all the rest if the model. Perhaps if it was a good deal fatter, afterall I would expect that in real life it would be cast iron, or a brick wall, or even a riveted iron pillar.
But the model does look really good otherwise.
only my opinion
very best wishes
Jem.

Getting better John but I was thinking more of a turned stanchion, like a curvy vase. I guess you are picking up on the existing screw holes? At the end of the day it is your model and you should do what makes you happy not what the rest of us think!!
Good luck, you can tell you are having fun!!

Tim I'm warming to the idea of a turned stanchion. However, I'm not trying to create a diorama, just a nice looking working steam plant. The tiles will cover the existing holes, so I could put a single stud up through the board and screw the manifold down onto that. I'll be using studs all over to make transportation easier as it weighs a ton already! John

A Stanchion it is!A piece of alloy and a profiling tool, cut at 1 degree or so on the compound slid. Tapped 4BA each end. 20190305_162037 by inkaboat, on Flickr That's better! I'm painting the whole manifold green to match the engine and the condenser. I've been going mad with my buffing spindle: the pipes are nice!. 20190305_163144 by inkaboat, on Flickr

A Major Setback!I started on the mounting studs today. Unfortunately, The tiles are just about the hardest I have ever encountered. Ten minutes to drill a 3/16" hole with a new drill and then the tile cracked! I can't risk that happening with the others, so I am not going ahead with this board. 20190309_143217 by inkaboat, on Flickr I just happened to have another piece of walnut worktop - thanks Jez!- and it will be plain vanilla with a rebated edge like the first one. 20190309_143813 by inkaboat, on Flickr The old board is just the right size to show off my projects! I have a diamond tile drill, which is hollow. It needs to be run slowly (screwdriving speed on my screwdriver/drill). It also needs to be kept wet, and the drill residue can be removed through the slot in the side of the drill.
Very similar to the ones in the Kerrin’s post.

Thanks both, I have ordered a 5mm Irwin diamond drill bit, and we will see how I get on as it is a shame to waste three day's work! John

I received my Erwyn 5mm bit yesterday (£15.00!) , and using a guide block made from gauge plate, I've managed to accurately embed all the necessary studs to enable the thing to be easily dismantled for transportation. It was much easier than I thought it would be! It's finished now, I'll steam it tomorrow on video! youtu.be/3EJLjIac0bc
