As an aside to long-term loco builds, I thought I'd amuse myself by making a little oscillating engine. I found the plans online for this wee beastie: I've made a couple of changes to suit what metal stocks I have, then set about cutting bits to rough size. Then started on machining, with the cylinder and flycrank. The current status: Flycrank finished to shape, bushes turned up, and the plates cut and drilled, but still need shaping. Someone on twitter asked how to make a flycrank, so I made this gif of a fairly simple method. A fun little distraction so far, I'm just doing a bit each night once dad's asleep; shouldn't take long to finish at all.

Reminds me of Ted Bray's "Lunch Engine" in the ME mag some time ago....
Lisa, how about a simple pot boiler to compliment it ??

When I lived in Andover, our then club President was famed for his oscillating engine locomotives.
He sadly died a few years ago, but I believe his last loco (Wapiti) was given to the Andover club, and is still in use.
Rex - how about a picture of it in action?

Wapiti does indeed reside with ADMES, unfortunately it has been out of ticket since Gordon passed away. There are moves to try and restore it to running order. The difficulty is that it is full of Gordon’s originality and there are no drawings. I will try and find a picture to post.

Made the cylinder backplate and port faces this morning; this mostly involved ripping some 25x12mm brass down to 18x10 and 20x6 respectively. Half-hole for the cylinder to get soldered into. That's starting to look like something.

Rex - how about a picture of it in action? George has alrady commented but there might be some historic footage knocking about. I will investigate.

After much searching I found this picture of Wapiti. although only driving on one pair of wheels this locomotive was a very competent passenger hauler in Gordons hands.

No it wasn’t Wapiti. However Gordon had a Yorkshire steam wagon also powered by a twin oscillator that he could convert to a 7 1/4” loco of an indian prototype. I have a picture of that somewhere if you are interested.

The engine that could be converted was the Atkinson Ballast Tractor. If you search for ‘The International Toy and ModelSteam Hospital’ on Facebook, he owns both lorry’s now. When I went to get the Atkinson from Reading the chap who bought it out of auction had disposed of the body work for the Loco conversion, and I believe the chassis ended up as the basis for a battery electric loco. Gordon is a much missed mentor of mine, many happy memories driving his engines all over the place and repairing them in his shed when I should have been at college! Will

Will You are of course correct, I had forgotten the chain connection, yet another of Godons unconventional way of doing things. I couldn't remember which of the two wagons gordon had used for the convertible, I should have looked up the ADMES boiler register when I would have been able to pick the correct one. I've found this pictuer of Gordon driving the Bombay, Baroda & Central India Railway locomotive powered by his Atkinson wagon hidden inside the bodywork.

Sorry Lisa - me bringing up Gordon's engines has slightly taken over your thread.
