You buy a job lot like this one. I saw this come up very late last night on Homeworkshop and I sent an email straight away. I phoned at 8.00 am and was first in the queue this afternoon, and the seller said that the phone hadn't stopped ringing all day! Stuart Sirius from WWII, Stuart Sun, marinised Stuart Double 10, another double vertical engine, unused vertical boiler - gas or coal fired, three steam driven boiler feed pumps, valves, connectors etc. etc... I'll certainly be kept busy restoring this lot! John Happy bunny 20190306_173617 by inkaboat, on Flickr 20190306_173718 by inkaboat, on Flickr

Dear all, learned and thoroughly Imperial Model Engineers, and others who are concerned!!! Those loyal to the Empire!! Those who inch and yard etc Forget BREXIT, we have a new crisis as you can see from this propaganda shown above. I make my case! Simplyloco is not loco but stationary!, He should be let any where, he should be stationary wherever he is!!! Simplystationary, sort of thing Yes, yes, yes, some nice little popee dopers but really. But now to the serious question. I will confess to first hand knowledge of this dangerous transaction. In the premises (loosely defined as such, see picture) I saw this, IMG_1297 by David Goyder, on Flickr Comments (please in at least 1000 words to the Editor, The Times)! But then this hideous, label emerged, IMG_1296 by David Goyder, on Flickr Now what is this I suppose, some new Metric curse upon us defenceless mortals. I bet this is Roger's work, in filtrating decent workshops with some new system, 'Operational Digital Devices', 'Offset Diagonal Denters', who knows but I urge all members to be aware there is a new ODD curse upon our hobby. Those willing to help could contribute to the Midland Milling Fund with 10 hours milling expertise or a coffee at the Doncaster MEX in May. Do reply in confidence, especially on the forum!!! Cheers David

A great haul there John. I hope you will share the restorations with us. How to keep busy for the next 20 years? I only have to look at the part builds under the bench ! Paul

Looks like this lot won't take 20 years! I started the Sirius yesterday, ran it on air to make sure that I wasn't wasting my time, and then started the renovation. As there is no sign whatsoever of any wear, all I have to do is polish and paint it! A few pics: It started like this. Filthy dirty, an unfettled valve chest casting - it was wartime!- , a lumpy boss on the inlet manifold, and serious tarnishing. 20190309_162016 by inkaboat, on Flickr I cleaned it with some petrol. I loosely connected the airbrush compressor and the thing ran like a watch! www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3xXMY67OlAQuite happy now, I took it apart. There was no discernable wear in the bores or anywhere else! 20190309_171643 by inkaboat, on Flickr Most of these I've seen have a hideous connector added to the inlet manifold. I found an original photo and the engine now has a reasonable copy of the original connector. I thought the thread was 0.5" UNF 20 tpi. Thanks to David for the tap! Unfortunately for me, it was 0.514" UNF so I had to get my hand chaser out to finish the job! 20190310_130812 by inkaboat, on Flickr It now looks quite nice. I'll grit blast the body at the Club on Wednesday, paint it, refit the flywheel and put it on the shelf to await the completion of my Scotch boiler and the 4'6" MTB! 20190310_171105 by inkaboat, on Flickr 20190310_171116 by inkaboat, on Flickr

Today's jobs included making a 40 tpi insert for a displacement lubricator: it is only needed for the valve gear, as the Sirius has a wet sump and splashers on the crank. The next a look at the cladding to see if it could be saved, and lastly, make a new head gasket. Managed to do all three, and also fired up the vertical boiler with some nuts... Blended in quite nicely! 20190311_115513 by inkaboat, on Flickr Rolled out the cladding and cleaned it up: it certainly got rid of most of the lumps! 20190311_123635 by inkaboat, on Flickr Cladding cleaned up and the lubricator added. 20190311_133018 by inkaboat, on Flickr Fits like a glove! I'll grit blast it and paint it on Wednesday. 20190311_135710 by inkaboat, on Flickr A new head gasket from brown paper, cut out the old fashioned way! Who needs CNC anyway... 20190311_140824 by inkaboat, on Flickr Oh, and here's the video running the D10 on coal! youtu.be/Dyh8VPK7wZA

I understand some of the WW2 sirius engines were built for generator sets for small radios, might be worth checking if yours is one. I seem to recall there are some distinguishing marks.

Well spotted. This is a genuine veteran, as it has a pressure gauge on the manifold, a speed regulator on the inlet, and I have the 'flexible' connector for the generator on the end of the crank John

Carrying on the theme of 'How to keep busy', this is where the Stuart D10 motor and the Scotch boiler will end up. I bought a boat mould at a car boot sale many years ago for just £10, and when I got it home I found this lovely moulded hull in it! I like the shape, and the flat transom bottom promises a fair turn of speed... 20190311_164249 by inkaboat, on Flickr 20190311_164323 by inkaboat, on Flickr

I have to say I was disappointed with the performance of the vertical boiler running on coal. The grate was level with the door, making the grate so shallow that there was no depth to the fire, so some drastic action had to be taken! Therefore I've machined out the grate recess to drop it about 10 mm, and this arrangement seems to me to be a better idea, but as a self confessed dumbo when it comes to firing coal grates, I'll just have to suck it and see! The boiler design didn't provide an entry point for the ceramic burner, so I've machined a slot at the rear of the base: much neater now! Long reach boring bar and just 120 rpm. The chips still came off blue! 20190317_151308 by inkaboat, on Flickr Someone please reassure me that I've done the right thing! 20190317_153324 by inkaboat, on Flickr Simple one bolt setup on the FB2 mill. I used a 12mm end mill taking 2mm cuts at 370 rpm plus some splash coolant. 20190317_155519 by inkaboat, on Flickr Much neater! 20190317_162601 by inkaboat, on Flickr

Next job was to plank the boiler. These mahogany planks came with it, but were 1/2" wide so that was a job for my budgie bandsaw! 20190321_175647 by inkaboat, on Flickr Now it looks prettier, but I have to fix boiler bands onto it with an invisible join: something that I have not attempted before. Any suggestions are welcome. I'm looking for a smokebox ring casting to go on the top. 4.5" OD. 20190322_204437 by inkaboat, on Flickr

Does it have to be an invisible join, or could you make a feature of it? Pretty brass tensioning nuts or similar.
