They don't make them like that any more!
Just curious, but in a lot of the shots there seemed to be a continuous blow of steam from under the cylinders, in the region of the drain cocks. Was this normal, if so, why?

I think that's a cylinder drain cock leaking ---no, not normal..
the leak is actually not continuous but intermittent...Generally a cylinder block would have 3 drains ie}--- Front, rear and central cavity....

Cheers Pete Hi Pete, I sort of guessed you might have....always worth a second look though, I particularly like the close-up views taken from a travelling car.....it's nice to watch that motion in action and to notice just how far it is linked up..... When No.9 was at the SVR I took the opportunity to walk through the corridor tender with a couple of friends.....It was dark and quite claustrophobic and that was just standing still...goodness knows what a rattling din it must have been out on the main line !! Opening the Cod's Mouth was an interesting experience for me as a GWR devotee........That must have been unique on the British railways system ??

One of the "Silver Fox" emblems is on display at the NRM. Have you got the other one under your bench?

Hi Tony,
That's a good, clear image with plenty of detail---- did you take it ??...........
I'm guessing that they would be "Handed" so that would be the R/H one then......
Incidentally, why does the film start off in Waterloo Station ??...Isn't that a Schools Class loco in the middle of the opening shot ??
answers on a Post Card please ..

Yes, I did take it but in the museum, not on the loco, unfortunately. I suppose the director might say the shots of Waterloo were to demonstrate all regions were planning their summer timetable? The film always gives me a good feeling - nice how they bring in the efforts of everyone, even if it is a little corny. The catering is always impressive - Virgin please note! At least they kept the same loco throughout - a lesson for many directors to learn - Mr. Portillo, and the director of the Kenneth More "The Thirty nine Steps" when a train with an A4 leaves Edinburgh with Hannay on board and when it stops on the Forth bridge it is a different A4! I always think I would have liked to have gone to the school towards the end of the film, where the A4 goes by and only one boy in the playground notices! They don't make them like that any more! Just curious, but in a lot of the shots there seemed to be a continuous blow of steam from under the cylinders, in the region of the drain cocks. Was this normal, if so, why? Did the director say "Turn on the drain cocks a bit to show a bit of steam - people like that?" Later in the film there is no leak.
