Hello all, Thank you all for your very useful advice. I managed to rough out another set of four wheels on a friends big lathe this weekend, so I now have enough for two wagons. I have also machined the wheel mounting mandrel in-situ on my boxford lathe and am just about to final machine four of the blanks. This is my first attempt at posting pictures, so please forgive me if this goes horribly wrong!!! i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii27/02jcole/workshoppics003.jpgi260.photobucket.com/albums/ii27/02jcole/workshoppics004.jpgYou may note that the mandrel has a thin brass sleeve on it as I managed to turn the spigot to small using one of my cheapy £10 verniers which I think has got far too much swarf and coolant inside it to measure accurately! I also cut a circle of thick paper to trap between the wheel and mandrel to allow to any slight uneveness in the surface. ;D Regards James.

Looking good James. You should do fine with that.
I've used bits of beer cans on a mandrel in similar circumstances. It worked well for me.
