If you do go down the Mill/Drill route, then get yourself a wiggler to find the edges of the workpiece. You can then position the workpiece under the quill exactly where you want it (don't forget to compensate for the wiggle diameter) and go straight in with a Centre Drill. Once centre drilled, go for it :-) I only ever mark out now for an approximate indication. Wiggler: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiggler_(tool)

I bought me one of these for marking out: www.buitelaar.nl/comasy/templates/product.aspx?contentid=237&productid=484 Better than using the slide rule for marking out Not perfect either but it suits me better than calipers or rulers. But if it is a piece that needs to be milled and drilled, then I use the mill as a coordinate drill and don't mark out but go at it with the center drill directly. And whatever you do, make sure it is clamped well and safely. If it can move a bit it will.

Thanks all very much for the advice. What a helpful bunch you are. I have read bits and pieces of some of the advice given but have never seen in one book all the helpful suggestions together. You could almost start a "how do you do that" heading on the forum. Thanks very much again
