Hi Steve The Modelworks 9F is a good starting point for what can be made into a very respectable engine if you purchase Dave Nobles or Doug Hewsons scale parts to complement it. Sorting out the pipe work and valves so they dont go through window openings will help on its own and apparently getting the cylinders reworked will transform the machine.

Hi Steve I dont personally have a Winson/Modelworks 9F (My 9F is to the original Les Warnett Design) but having spoken to people who have either Britannia's or 9F's they seem have a reputation for being asmatic! The cause seems to be the steam passages and the valve sleeves/ports. I know of one person who eventually ended up repalcing the Winson cylinders with a new set to the Warnett design and was amazed at the diffrence and another who after a lot of fiddling got a result he was happy with. I suggest you have a chat with Adrian at the engineers emporium to find out more, as he seems to end up doing most of the reworks. Otherwise pop along to one of the owners days and have a chat with someone who's got one. cheers
Andy

Hello, yes I have recently completed a 9F, finished as evening star. Very much to talk about, but once done a really nice model. It was really worth that bit of effort. I am writing up my build notes and these will be available once complete. In the mean time if you have questions I will try and help ! I have to say Modelworks have been superb, I came by the kit having heard all about the past ( now years and years ago of coarse) but it was a starter for 10. I really wanted a a 9F , now I have one. I am more of a " get it going and enjoy it" kind of engineer, having been born after these things were withdrawn. So although a want a strong machine that works well and properly, I am not quite so interested in the number of rivets being correct ! ;D

Hi, yes I did rework the cylinders, the set I am currently running have the steam ports to the cylinder ends increased to 7mm (38.48mm sq) from 4mm (12.57mm sq). Also the bronze piston valve liners ( 2 per side) have 3 carefully placed grooves in each and have "o" ring seals. The exact position of the grooves can vary depending on where the factory steam passage drilling actually breaks out into the valve bore. I am using PTFE rings on cast iron bobbins and they seem fine so far. I am however going to try chrome plated piston valve liners and cast iron rings next to retain the ability to run on air if necessary. The "o"rings on the valve liners work very well, but take extreme care fitting and use very thick oil to help them in. Make sure you have the correct valve bobbins, otherwise the lap is too small. The steam circuit needs a quick check, make sure you have the large bore wet steam pipe and full flow 316 reg valve. The steam collector in dome benefits from some quick elongating of holes and rounding of corners too. The boilers are fantastic steam raisers, increase the number of holes to 8 in each safety valve, other wise with a ring blower you wont get through the accumulation test ! Yes I do have pictures and details of exactly what to do to sort the cylinders. I actually have 2 more 9F's under complete rebuild / build for other people who just wanted to get a model back certified , painted and ready to run and detail in their own time. hope that little lot helps.

Hi everyone, does anybody know the history of the 9F which was for sale at Maxitracs in 2005. I brought it, but Maxitracs didn't know any of its history, it is a complete rebiuld with many small parts missing I would be interested to here from anybody with information I would like to locate the missing parts, especially the regulator mechanisum before I have to remake it! Its a long shot but you never know.
regards, Andy

How are you getting on the 9F? stumbled on your site a while ago and it seems a while since any updates. I keep meaning to take some shots of one of my engine builds but haven't got round to putting it on the web as I enjoy following other peoples build diaries so it's not intended as a criticism, better to be out in the workshop. The thing that would put me off a 9F would be quartering the wheels! not so much each one individually, but making sure they all go 'round after adding the rods; getting all the axle centres correct. I don't know how closely the EIM (Warnet?) plans were to the Winson/Modelworks 9F

I'm held up waiting for a lathe after 25 years of access to a full machine shop(i was a fitting and turning teacher) I'm missing access to the machinery they won't let you back in the shop after you retire.

yes,the first batch of wheels had the wrong wheel profile wit ha very shallow flange and quite a sharp root radius, I dont recall the tread being parallel though.

When this first came on last week it had a 'buy it now' price of £6500 which I thought was reasonable concidering the cost of a boiler for one of these.
