Thanks, Julian
He certainly is doing a grand job and very quickly too, it's going to be a lovely boiler that's for sure.

Good afternoon all A have a few more pictures from Paul, these are the crown stays for you all to enjoy... Paul informs me that the throat and side stays are also done along with those for the arch support, pictures to follow. Cheers Pete

Hi Pete, That's a superb job. I wonder what Silver Solder he's using because those fillets look pretty big to me. I'd be surprised if you could get them that big with 55% Silver Solder.

I just noticed that he has left the back row of stays unsoldered to the outer wrapper. It makes sense to do them when the blackhead goes on as they are so close but it is not something I would have thought of.

Hi Simon
It may also be because the manifold bush hasn't been fitted yet, so makes sense to do them together. It won't be a normally threaded bush, Paul will CNC a scale bush to match Adam's drawing.
Cheers
Pete

I tell you what, it's all go tonight, Adam (Cro fittings) has just sent me the finished rendering for the manifold that he's been working on for me, to say that it's excellent doesn't do it any justice at all. Judge for yourselves chaps... First, the reference ... and now the render which will be 3D printed and then cast in bronze... it looks superb....well done Adam, thank you sir... Pete Pete please let Adam know to scale one of these up..,. this looks great tom

This is taking scale details to dizzying new heights. It is setting way too high a bar for me.

This is taking scale details to dizzying new heights. It is setting way too high a bar for me. I think you can do the same if you choose Simon...the height of the bar is only what one sets for themself. I just happen to like things to be as close as possible to the real thing, no matter what the subject, I've always been like that. Trust me when I say, it can be a curse at times... You could fit Adam's manifold too, especially if you haven't fitted the bush on your boiler yet. Kind regards Pete

Quite right Pete but I set the super detaining bar low. I am more obsessed with getting the mechanicals as nearly perfect as my equipment will allow. I made 3 sets of steam chest liners for my Springbok until I was completely happy, for example. I had my expansion links and dies wire cut. The important works had to be right. I was rewarded with a faultless first run with excellent beats in forward and reverse. But the cab fittings I made easy to drive and made no attempt to arrange them prototypically. The finishing has stalled because I have to make oil boxes, tender tool boxes, lamp irons, etc and they hold no interest. And just practically, the build probably takes twice as long if you do all the detail properly. We all approach the hobby differently, as has often been said. You do it meticulously which makes it a great pleasure to follow.

That looks great Pete. I'd definitely use big copper rivets from the inside like that instead of the phosphor bronze stays I laboriously made. Are the extended ones to support an arch?

Yes, they are Roger, it's certainly looking the part with lots of extra strength built in, it could hold more pressure than the original design if wanted. Pete

Its incredibly clean Pete, could you ask what pickle is used please? I am going to start on my somewhat smaller Lamb boiler soon and am trying to get my ducks in a row before I start.
Looking fantastic!

I'd love to watch this Paul for a session to see just how he gets it all so neat and perfect. Does he use solder rings on the tubes for example or simply apply rods. Lots af experience, I suppose. It probably takes about 10-20 boilers before you can afford to consider the aesthetics, rather than just getting it sealed. Is the arch going to be a bit of stainless plate?

I don't know his process when soldering, I'll try to remember to ask both your's and Tim's question next we speak. As for the arch material used, I'll be using Iconel as I know it will have no issue with any heat thrown at it. I actually have a downpipe off my car that should do the job nicely depending on how easy 'or not' I find it is to work with.
I'll probably take a look at this in the near future.

Hi Pete,
You have an extremely well made boiler there from Paul in the offings with no scrimping on the silver soldering, and again generous application of silver solder which is what I like.
Lovely pics that complement your own build of the chassis etc.
Paul makes it look very easy - which it isn't for the amateur on such a big heavy boiler.
Cheers,
Julian
