Believe it or not, this is a 3 1/2" scale Brit cab: the whole locomotive is in the same vein! Working vacuum brakes, twin lubricators etc. His first loco too, just like me. 'ow to be 'umbled....! At least my doors are something like it! The whole article is fascinating: ME 15 December 1967. Interestingly enough, it would appear that I wasn't the only fellow to suffer a serious boiler throat plate failure. Read on! JB PS: Anyone know who owns this now or where it is? I'd just love to see it!

Some nice detail on that Backhead, I can pick out some of the pieces that you've been making JB, very nice. Talking about vacuum brakes, i received in the post this morning the castings for the vacuum cylinders, well half of them, rest to come next month so i'm told but half is all i need for the tender.. BTW anyone have trouble with this site today, it's been down for a while i think? Pete

I was lucky enough to examine the loco at close quarters many years ago. What a wonderful piece of work! Tongue in cheek, I criticised the lack of a brew can on the warming plate and Roy immediately rectified the situation, together with a shovel, hand brush and bucket.
And she ran as well as she looked. I too wonder where she is now.

A very interesting thread. I found an image of Roy Amsbury's excellent Britannia in a copy "The Model Steam Locomotive" by the late Martin Evans. It would be interesting to know where this loco, and indeed his superb 51XX,are now. Attachments:

The last place I saw some of Roy's stuff was in the NRM, in the area which I think they call the Warehouse. Lots of locos which I recognised from M.E. Exhibitions, in cases, stacked up to the roof. I distinctly recall his 'Deltic' being there.

Looking at that wonderful backhead I was thinking he made a mistake by putting the blowdown valve of the right hand water gauge on the right hand side. I noticed it because I've just made exactly the same error. I was thinking both blowdown valves were towards the centre of the engine. Having just rechecked the photos it turns out were both correct-Mr Amsbury by design and me by pure accident. It must be the first time in the build that one of my mistakes has turned out to be correct. The glass is still a bit long at this stage. Attachments:

Two things to say about the Britannia First having driven it, it goes as well as it looks. The other is that he bought a part built chassis which he stripped and detailed. Roy's Britannia is now in Italy as far as I know. Also I believe his Cally and the De-glen. The 51xx is in a glass case at his sisters in Southend in Essex.

Nice to know the 51xx is still with the family. The loco came second in I.M.L.E.C. sometime in the early 1970's,so it was a good performer on the track as well as being such a good looking and accurate model.I believe Roy Amsbury made his own pressure and 'Duplex' gauges,no mean feat that!Attached is photo of the 51xx scanned from Model Engineer. Hello all, I've just found this site devoted to my old friend Roy Amsbury who used to visit my club when it was sited at St. Mellon's and also at the new club after it moved to the Glebelands at Newport. Roy was a real gentleman and a brilliant model engineer who deservedly became a Judge at the International Model Engineer Exhibition at London. I well remember his models which he invariably brought with him when he visited us from Derby, and I recall that he used to make his own injectors as well as the Duplex gauges. I recall that on his injectors fitted to his "Britannia" he had drilled small holes in the side of their body's to allow automatic restarting when they "knocked off". Our world was truly more sad when Roy passed on and I'm pleased to be able to say I knew him.
Taff.

Taf I agree. He was a real gentleman and friend. He also had a great sence of humor, in the late 70's we put a 5" track down round my parents house. He brought both the 51xx and the cally down to run on it. He complained that the track was too smooth and his fire would not shake forward !

In trawling through some old Christies catalogues I saw that Roy's Britannia was offered for sale at their South Kennsington showroom in April 2002. It was quoted at between 4,000 and 6,000 UK pounds but apparently it did not sell. Kind of wished I'd been there at the time and bought it.
