A friend of mine happened to have an Australian copy of ME which had drawings and info on auto drain cocks. These have been made and fitted to my B1. I've only steamed / ran it once since fitting but they seem to work just fine. Attachments:

Found the fag packet. Two in fact, one with dims. is irrelevant really, its the principle as shown in in the other sketch that matters. Full boiler pressure acts on the SS bobbin, fitted into a polished body to be a smooth sliding fit and keeps it up against the flat face i.e.shut. Cylinder steam (invariably at a lower pressure) is acting on a smaller area so even if you've got the "handle in the roof", the differential in areas still keeps the bobbin on the face. Shut off boiler steam and vent the inlet to atmosphere and cylinder steam will push the bobbin astern and off the flat face and open the drain. Shut off the vent and apply full boiler steam and they shut. One steam line to a four outlet manifold, fed via a three way valve, (steam on, or steam off and vent), and that's it. We tried the very small three port valves available commercially and though we use them successfully for vacuum brake valves (about £35 from FLOWTEC), the seals gave up on hot steam after bit so we had some made by BARKER who uses a better seal material in his three cock gauge frames. These items are pretty much able to stand a lot of abuse and only give trouble if gummed up with oil or debris but don't they all. Last of all we didn't invent these, we refined some very badly made items on a kit loco we rebuilt. Best of luck John Attachments:

Got it! Without the vent, there would still be residual pressure holding the cock closed after the steam is turned off. As always seems to happen, the 'penny dropped' soon after I had posted the my query. Many thanks for the confirmation.
