Power feeds
I have just fitted a Y axis power feed to my Bridgeport it’s the standard Align model sold by Chester and others. Surprisingly for these days the instructions are just like the bad old days of “Japlish” and not that clear.
My problem is I am sure if any shims need to be added to this set up. They are shown for the X and Z axis but it is not clear to me if they need to be added for the Y. So all I have done is tighten the hand wheel until I had an acceptable backlash on the table.
When engaging the feed it’s nice and quiet but there is a disturbing thwack at each engagement. I assume this is caused as the motor takes up the backlash in the table anyone else have any other experiences?

I put one of those power feeds on my X axis last year and the kit came with a number of different shims for the backlash but I cant help you on the Y axis installation. My drive unit also does the "thwack" at startup. I have discovered that the movement of the gear that is used for changeing direction is the cause of thwack. I have had no problems with it thus far.

Greg,
Thanks for the info I guess “happiness” is two thwacks on different machines. So for now I will ignore it.
