Hi Wilf, If in the end you decide to split the axle boxes. You can pick up some felt for them in the Pumphouse next time you visit. I have a small quantity left, enough for both our Loco's. Regards John.

John, I'll bring the bits I've got so far along next week, and we can work out a plan.
I have the cast iron blocks bored out, and the bushes are bored and reamed. I'm going to mount on a mandrel to turn the ousides to a light press fit.
Wilf

Hi, Slightly off topic, but still very interesting is a German video about re-assembly of the split big-end bearing of a connecting rod including the assembly of the motion on the same side of the locomotive. It's a P8 no 38 2267. The felt assembly is at the beginning. www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2KHQYs81qgBest regards, hudson

Hi Wilf, Last Wednesday evening in the Pumphouse, Glyn brought along one of the frames of his new protect, 5"G Speedy with the horns he made up riveted into the frames. The split axle boxes were up to his high standard, his one question was where could he get some felt to go into the pocket in the lower half of the boxes.
That's when he found he was in the right place. The felt I was able to give him a piece of came from Waterlows banknote makers some 50 Years ago and is very good quality even after all this time.
Glyn had wound his springs, but still needed some more 18 swg to finish the rest, luckily for him I had about a dozen lengths left over from a job some 10 years ago. Regards JtP

A good source of felt might be had from an old piano that is / has been dismantled.

hi digger, the wood and cast iron from an old piano is quite useful too... ive a clock with marquetry panels made from an old piano, and ive known the cast iron to be cut up into all sorts of things! don young's workbench was made out of an old piano. i wouldnt cut up my current piano though! i do tune it myself and the tuning wrench i made for it has puzzled quite a few model engineers ive shown it to when ive asked them what they think it is... its got a tapered square broached in the lathe. cheers, julian
