Finally an update on the 9F!!!! Firstly, at the start of December we (me and EJP) had a trip to the NRM at York and a solid 7 hours upstairs saw us look through about 120 drawings of the 9F and also the BR1 Tenders. What we learnt and was surprised to find was that after the first 50 9F's were built (92000 - 92049) a quite significant design change appeared to some of the Locomotive's Stretchers and the spacing of the stretchers. Fortunately this hasnt Effected me as i've been working from drawings of 92050 onwards... Now, i've also, almost decided which 9F to model, this being 92079, for reasons about to come clear. 92079 was "Big Bertha's" replacement on the Lickey Incline and inherited Her big front headlamp, I think that this looks really quite smart and a little different so i'd like to model it. Now, when I was at the NRM I looked at the drawings specific to the fitment of the headlamp to 92079's Smokebox door, the piping and wiring but nothing on the headlamp its self or the Turbo Generator that powered it. Does anyone know anything about either of these items? ? Any help with that would be appreciated, along with any pics of 79 in service. I've ordered another 5 drawings from York also to be getting on with. And onto today. I've managed to do a little bit more to the Pony Truck Pivot Stretcher, i've machined the angles you can see in the front and rear faces and also the angles on the 2 "sticky out" bits and also finished the center pocket to size. Thanks for looking.

Thanks for looking. I have done Tufnol springs before by holding to the shape required by putting them between pins mounted in a bit of plate and putting them in boiling water for about (I think) 20/30mins then just let them cool. You may get a bit of spring back but very little. David

I saw in a video about the Lickey incline that the tender on 92079 was modified with a cutout in the side of the tender to allow easier filling of coal using the hand pushed trollies. I think there was a foot step along side it too. There may have been a mod to the tender side to aid the vision when running tender first. I don't know if this would have had official drawings or if it was modified to suit on site!

Yes, 79's Tender was modded to aid coaling, now I'm of the impression that this was done on shed with a gas axe so i'll have to guess this when I do mine. (on that note, i've been considering making a Standard 4 2-6-0 next with the 2-6-4 tank along side and so i'll have a choice of tenders because i'll make 2 together during the 9F's build) As for allowing better vision in reverse, i'm not sure but would love to see. The BR1G Tender is pretty good for going backwards unlike the BR1F.
And thanks Ben, Everything helps.
92230 replaced 79 on the Lickey but 79 retained its tender (and then was swapped from else where) and the headlight wasnt moved so its where abouts is as far as I know is a bit of a mystery.

There you go, right under the drivers bum! There's the genny! From experience on Bulleid Pacifics I would say the drivers were pretty upset it was there! They are very irritating! The LNER had the right idea, put them by the smokebox!!

The headlamp was the same one fitted to Bertha, so for info try researching Bertha. The tender was modified on site, I believe unofficially hence no documentation. The headlamp wasn't used as it gave the game away as to what was banking. If the lead crew saw the headlight they didn't work as hard thus making life harder for the 9F crew.

Yes, i've been looking at Big Bertha as well, her crews knew her as Big Emma.

I had a look at my 9F research notes over Christmas - Have a look at Richard Derry's book of the 9F's page 132 for a picture of 92079s tender with the cut out. There is a similar picture in the Power of the 9Fs page 10. Atkins references 92079 headlight in his book and comments that "92079 remained at Bromsgrove until 1963, the 2-10-0 lost its headlight about three years earlier".

Thats helpful thanks, does he say anything about where the Light was from? One of the guys at Tyseley seems to think it might of been made by a J Stone and co in Depford, trouble is, they dont exist any more. So that does beg the question, does anyone know anything about them?

"Below the running plate and just in front of the cab footsteps can clearly be seen the British Thompson and Houston Co. Ltd steam turbo-generator fitted in 1921 to supply the powerful headlight...."
This appears in several references - probably cribbed from an original source somewhere . Refers of course to the Midland engine but I understand that equipment was transferred complete to 9F .

Stones made the generators and lighting equipment for BR Mk 1 coaches and the air conditioning units fitted to BR Mk 2 coaches. anyone who has had anything to do with BR Mk 1&2 coaches will know all about Stones!

Well, sadly, time is still not showing its self for my 9F and when it does, the machine i need isnt available. However, dads not overly busy at work at the minute so i commissioned him to make me a load of Horn Keeps for the tender(s) i'm making. these are once again an amalgamation of Les Warnett's design with the works Drawings. I've decided to use an M2.5 bolt in these to add a bit more strength to them due to me planning to sit on the tenders for ground level running. Sadly no pics of how he made them.... and once again, Melissa is chuffed to bits with Grandad's handy work. Here is a pic of 70000 Britannia's tender axle area showing a real Horn Keep, I think i'm close enough even if the slot isnt quite the right width. Hopefully, the drawings I ordered from the NRM in December last year should be ready next weekend. Thanks for the info on the lamp and generator on 92079.... the search continues...

Not of much import really, but Stones electric lighting was fitted on LNER B1 4-6-0s.
