Hi All - The main objection surely of using a Jim Ewins design of lubricator is that a fair proportion of the overall height of the lubricator has to be below the foot plating or side platform of the engine to which it is fitted. Whilst this is perfectly acceptable for a freelance design it does mean that if used on a mainline loco where you are trying to keep things to scale you end up with something which can look grossly out of place. In this respect the LBSC design is to be preferred.

Couldn't agree more, they are a bit of a monster!
The trick is to fit the tanks between the frames, the whole can be made easily removable if need be.
Must be plenty of room on a "Black 5"? My 5" Jubilee has them fitted in front of the middle cylinder as per Alcock's design.

Hi all just come across another way of skinning the cat. LC Mason describes a lubricator where the ram is hollow and the cylinder slides horizontally driven by an eccentric. The ram being hollow has a smaller displacement. The pump would be self priming and the output is adjustable by moving the ram in or out of the tank, if I can find a drawing of it I will post it here. It was designed for the 'Minnie' traction engine
