Hello all---------"Alan, could you just repair this for me ?".........and with that SWMBO dumps a portable Beard and Hair trimmer in my lap....I'm suddenly dragged away from derring-do tales of 9F's on an up coal doing battle with a howling gale on Dent summit at 3 in the morning, to domestic reality.....Brrr!!....."It's a good-'un" she assures me, "I got it from the pawn shop and they said it was working ok, but it's not"...................................Now I've got a nice collection of TORX drivers etc. so I thought this would be a "snip" and some easy "Day-pass to the workshop" points, with extra Kudos thrown in and then back to the book.......WRONG !!..................Sure, it comes apart easily enough with me taking mental notes as to it's re-build, ( Yes, I've got a camera but hey!!---if I can re-build a Rolls-Royce CV8 WITH powerpack then a little old beard trimmer's blade assembly should be easy-peasy ---YES ??).....A quick clean, light oil and back it goes together again..........Switch on and ?? >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Nothing !!.......I can hear the motor humming but no movement........OK lets repeat the sequence, as I might have got something nipped up in error..............Again, NOTHING but just that humming.....After about 3 or 4 more attempts ( with the same results) I'm starting to turn Verbal now...Trying to invoke the ancient Celtic gods of Doom, birth right, hell-fire and damnation ( with salt and vinegar thrown in !!) hasn't helped but did draw SWMBO's attention to my plight....After a swift look she points to a Phos. Bronze spring clip saying "Why not turn this over the other way ??"----------I mumble that it wasn't that way when first dismantled and continue as before, with the same, predictable result ie}--- ZILCH-O !!Then the "Dawn of Realisation" struck me}---- THE COMPUTER !!!After a few mins. not only did I have a tutorial as to the re-build but a video to watch as well.....It seems that this had been dismantled recently and put back incorrectly so I had been on a hiding to nothing all that time YE GODS !!.....You can guess what's coming next--eh ..SWMBO in "Smug-Mode" ....no, not at all..Worse than that it's SWMBO in "My Alan's wonderful" mode and could I have a look at the Sat-nav that needs re-calibrating, plus about 6 other similar "small" jobs.....................Gnashing of teeth and gnarling of bones !!

Always better to purchase from the porn shop than the pawn shop!
You mention YouTube as an aid - I was impressed recently after winding away at a lawnmower which, unusually for a Honda engine, refused to start. Having checked for a spark etc., I needed to set about the carb. It was late and I resorted to t'internet and found a bloke on youtube showing me the best way to dismantle the carb to clean the main jet and emulsion tube. Next morning, all fixed. Of course I made an error some time ago and ignored the old adage "never buy a lawnmower that your wife cannot lift!"
I have one or two things I can send for fixing when you are ready, but I have to say you have made a big mistake here. A few failures will soon put that right though. Things will soon be back to normal - "some men can fix anything, but all my Alan is interested in is motorbikes and trains"
You fell into the trap of assuming the last bloke got it right when assembling. Similarly, back to the models - it is often helpful to refer to a full size version for detail, but this assumes it has been restored as original. Not always the case I find.

Similarly, back to the models - it is often helpful to refer to a full size version for detail, but this assumes it has been restored as original. Not always the case I find. So very true, and it's starting to give me problems with the Manning Wardle. The more I delve in to it the more I find is not original. Current problems are the smokebox door and the saddle tank, or more specifically the fixing of the saddle tank. From the one remaining drawing I know how big it is, and I know that the front is supported on the smokebox by a section of angle ring. But the current tank is welded and I'm sure the original of 1897 would have been riveted, but what size and what pitch? How the rear of the tank was supported I'm struggling with. I think there was a pad somehow fixed to the tank, with two bolts each side in shear through the bunker sides. It might be the pad that's welded to the tank now, but how was it fixed before? They obviously didn't mearure twice cut once either...you can see where the side of the bunker has been hacked off to allow the new wider tank to slot in, and I now know what the extra holes are in the bunker front - they had to move the injector water valve spindle to match!
