As the owner builder of a 3" Burrell I very much subscribe to involving 'little uns'. You just never know what will grow from that initial experience. It could be this event that sparks a future interest in engineering who knows. Great photos too.

At our family party, in June at Welling & District MES, my two grandsons (one 6 in June and one 4 next November) we're driving the club Maid of Kent sitting in front of me. Then their cousin (Maisie, 5) wanted a go.
All of them took great care and did exactly as they were told.
The smiles were worth millions.
Get em interested when they're young.

my 2 daughters were indoctrinated from a very early age, spending much time with me in the workshop from 18 months onwards. my youngest daughter Emma would add bits from the brass 'bin' on top of whatever loco was being progressed, saying 'Daddy, ive made some more bits for you!' they both learnt to drive from age 6 onwards! my eldest dughter Lucy is now a far better driver of miniature steam locos than i am now. cheers, julian

Well, yesterday I spent the late afternoon at Rugby MES eating BBQ and admiring Phil's traction engine and it seemed rude to not put the little un on there.. She looked more at home than Ed did any way. So anyway, as a parent your told to keep small children away from hot stuff.... Amazing how you have made a scale driver for Phil's engine VB

"Amazing how you have made a scale driver for Phil's engine VB"-------------
easy really}--some intensive activity------- followed by a 9 month, nail-biting wait------then more intensive activity followed by 5 ? years of sleep deprivation, clothes and food by the ton, Dad's taxi service ( not forgetting the daily SWMBO factor) all of which brings forth one bundle of "dad's pride " !!.............

I was perched on a Romulus footplate at about 4 months old, got a photo somewhere. One had went straight for the regulator and the other for the reverser, and I've never looked back! I still drive that engine now, but I suspect having had a new boiler it's in better shape than me....

About the 9 month wait, then 5 years building time, that's quicker than waiting for castings that don't arrive, and the waiting time to get a boiler made. isc

Valve gears vary a bit, and my simulator can't handle them.
