Googling away as you do in the wee small hours as when you`r retired & don`t need so much sleep especially these hot nights,I stumbled upon Blackgates Engineering catalogue.I noticed that the list most of the drawings & possibly castings for the defunct Clarkson range of loco`s etc.Perhaps i will now be able to get the crosshead castings that Clarksons left out of the complete set of castings that my wife purchased for me in about 1983 for my 5" gauge Austerity 2-10-0. Ray, If you want a specific casting give them a call.
I had a good chat with them at the Guildford show and they are slowly sorting through the stuff including lots of the original castings (warning: which may have the original hard bits) and the patterns. Once they have sold the existing stuff they will be making new castings to their normal excellent standard.
I have an original set of Clarkson table engine castings which I am expecting to have some hard bits.

Purely out of idle curiousity, does anyone know where and why the drawings, patterns and castings went into hiding for over 30 years, with no apparent attempt to market them? I must check with Blackgates about the Steeple engine drawings, I always had a fancy for that scaled up a bit.

Jo Yes i know what you mean,my wheel castings had blow holes when i bored them for the axles but nothing serious. The centre drivers are a bit weird,if you left the counter weight 1/16" proud as per drawing, they fouled the coupling rod. Richard From what i gather, somebody connected with the company squirreled away the drawings & patterns for many years, that`s as much as i know!. Ray.

The story I was told was that the castings etc. were bought by a chap who owned an engineering or similar company. Presumably the intention was to market the range again at some point but it never happened.
Anyway, it's good that they are available again as Clarksons had some nice designs. The drawings however are a bit basic and leave a bit to the imagination!

John When i first got the drawings for the 2-10-0,i thought the boiler drawing lacked some detail so i phoned Clarksons for some advice, what advice is now lost in the mists of time.I think i got Harry Clarkson himself who said "you`r an engineer arn`t you?",end of conversation. The boiler is a work of art,if i ever get to that stage,i think i`d have to sell the house to afford it.Still,it keeps me out of mischief in my old age. I have actually made a start on this loco Although it`s taken me 25 years off & on,mainly off.Iv`e tried to upload a pic of the model so far but for the moment, this forum defeats me.I have the frames built with stretchers fitted & buffer beam & drag box.All the wheels have been machined along with axles & axle boxes with removable keeps so i have a rolling chassis.Crankpins turned & fitted, have made one coupling rod, centre driver to no.2 & am most of the way for the rod on the other side.As i said,if i can find out how to upload a pic of the loco in it`s present form,i will.
Ray.
