Some great English author wrote the story of the guy who aspired to be church verger but was rejected because he couldn't read or write. He left the interview and rented a shop nearby and prospered and prospered. Finally, a salesman tried to get him to sign a contract and of course he couldn't. The upshot was that -if he could read and write, he would have been- a bloody verger.
The details are somewhat sketchy now but 'I failed the 11 plus exam but was offered a place in grammar school at 14- without examination.' I didn't take it.
OK, I'm not very famous but there was one bloke that simply put his name down on an examination paper. He wasn't a model engineer but he did manage to build a wall. Hurrah for expertise
The name was- Winston Spencer Churchill.
The other 1 Plus Failure was that dear old bloke from Canny Wylam on the Tyne. I lived on one side of the river and he on the other. Not at the same time but you get the idea? No?
Cheers
Norman

Well done for Achieving the seemed impossible. I worked with many disabled students over the years and always found them to be the more interesting of the bunch. They who have struggled to achieve have more get up and go!!!
Going back several years...OK to 1969 I did badly at the 11 plus yet a house move and the coming together of two Schools meant that I did get to a Grammar School with all the teachers intact and the original inmates some of which hated us!!! Yes having a good set of teachers with a passion does help! One girl I remember failed cookery dear Mary passed all the others but was QUICK to join in the family business and make some of the best cheese this side of Hawkridge Farm, another Devonshire Cheese makers in our class, David and Nicolas Beer.
Oh dear my daughter is said to be behind again, comes from the ability to understand two languages I suppose which at 7 is so useful for getting better portions at Chinese takeaways!!! Looking part Chinese also helps. Shame that the national curriculum does not cover the ability to use a power screwdriver or claw hammer to build a rough model boat which she did with some help this week. At all other times she is drawing and illustrating made up books, reading and writing will come later when she gets inspired!!!
