A nice model but the steel boiler and steel tubes? We have enough problems with copper boilers and some club inspectors! Steel is usually used in larger models. I remember seeing two 4700 locomotives being built with copper boilers in 10 1/2 inch gauge which gave a lot of trouble, getting the heat into them hence usually steel in this size!

Full size 47xx locos had an Arsenic Copper inner firebox because Copper is so CONDUCTIVE of heat.....The tubes and outer firebox and barell being made of Steel, although some boiler designs in the past have had Copper tubes as well I believe.

There is a very successful 5 inch gauge Sweet Pea, winner of an IMLEC, that has a steel boiler, so what's wrong with one on an Ajax ?
If it's made of Stainless Steel, it would have to be professionally tested as no MES. Inspector would be able to test it under current rules agreed by S'Fed, NAME, etc.

Alan I thought stainless steel boilers were a complete no-no in the UK? If the vendor says its steel, after a recent boiler inspection, then it must be, its just that the backhead didn't look like a steel boiler, no weld beads round the bushes (do you need bushes in a steel boiler?)or the firebox door ring, and the backhead looks to be flanged, possible but not usual in a boiler this size?

The boiler's got all the proper paperwork so what's the problem? It is unusual for a boiler that small to be made in steel but frankly I'm surprised that more people don't use steel boilers, certainly for the larger models. The cost of commercial copper boilers is ridiculous nowadays. My brother's 5" American Forney has a steel boiler and he's never had any problem getting it tested at the club. It steams every bit as well as a copper one. There's a lot of rubbish said about steel boilers not steaming as well as copper ones due to the lower conductivity of steel but in the thicknesses used that doesn't make any difference.
Richard - the chamfer on the edge of the backhead is the weld making it look as though it is flanged.

nothing wrong with steel boilers aslong as you look after them properly and use boiler treatment

The boiler is made of steel. Not stainless steel or I would have said so!!! As with all the other words in the description I have endeavoured to make them as accurate as possible. the Engine is a lovely example of quality engineering. And now the certification as to its boiler testing ( August 2014) should pass the most rigorous examination. I do hope that any further enquiries are from would be potential buyers

I do hope that any further enquiries are from would be potential buyers -------------------Hello Harmonise, I see you've just joined so good to see you taking an active part on this forum already .........I take it you are the actual vendor ??...then you and I have already discussed this sale at length via the E-Bay e-mail....... I personally don't have a problem with steel boilers per se' having helped operate, restore and maintain full-size ones both in Marine and Rail applications,....but as one or two have just mentioned it'll need proper running and maintenance procedures that I suspect the average owner with Copper boiler experiences might not be aware of.........Hello BAGGO----if you look carefully, originally there was no "witness" to the tests...and, more importantly there's no documentation from the original builder.( And that after a 10 year lay-up).... However dear George has come forth since to help explain that slight "witness" error and all's well now......As to " Would-be potential buyers" ??--------Well, as again explained I was indeed initially drawn to this nice little model but for reasons already made clear I decided to invest my "spend-money" elsewhere...... The clue to E-Bay selling is to treat ALL enquiries as being from NON-Potential buyers....That way you won't be disappointed...... After all, it only takes ONE buyer from out of maybe a dozen or so enquiries and you're home and dry...PS}---I believe E-Bay are currently charging in the region of 10% seller fees .. I've just sold a NOS Simplex boiler and the fees were exactly that, alas!!-----Helpful hint}---If you're using PayPal remember they will charge YOU their fees for any cash transferred to you, not the person sending that cash ( Typically around 5% ) ---So for say a £100 deposit paid to you from the buyer, you'll only receive about £95................I genuinely wish you well with this sale-----------my best regards from}------Hagley
