I'm after a 12v whistle?
My model Toby tram has one which uses a small motor and gears to power a fan that blows air though a copper reed.
Does anyone know where I can get a replacement?

I know this is not the same idea but google this 'train whistle circuit' and you'll see that there are simple electronic ways of doing the same thing for a very low cost.

I think it depends on how sophisticated the chip is. You might find one that's acceptable.... even better would be to find one that's programmable and then you can make it sound like the real thing!

We fitted an electronic one at the Pumphouse recently - to replace a compressor driven one (that used too much juice). With an amplifier and speaker. It had a sampling system so we were trying it out with a variety of different source whistles (and rude yellings) to get the best out of it. It produced an acceptable result in the end - plenty loud enough.

Well, you'll have to be OK with a soldering iron - it turns out these were made from kits. What we fitted was a Velleman Single message record and playback kit, and a Velleman P4001 amplifier. Both were got from Maplins, but I can only see the first one listed on the web at the moment (Edit - found this K4001, which may be an upgrade). Although I did find this YouTube of amplifier construction! The amplifier is 4W - too much for the weedy speaker provided with the record/playback kit. So a left over tweeter from some other project was used. Wilf
