Hi Ben,
Thanks for sharing the pictures - it's a long, long time since I saw her last.

If I might paraphrase Mr. Scott:
She looks so much better from the time I saw her some 40-odd years ago!

This is great. I wish some day the few surviving engines in my country were restored to running condition. Maybe you could start the ball rolling?

No doubt in an independent Catalonia this would be tackled. We have a long industrial tradition and understand the value of that. Unfortunately there is not such a sensibility in the "Meseta" (that's how the central Spanish territories are jokingly called)

Out of curiosity, has anyone on the forum built a Nick Feast Q1?
Cheers
Charley

I haven't but the q1 is a loco I really do like. There is just something about it, maybe one day I could consider building one.... maybe a 2.5" one.... I find it a great shame there is only one left, and its not in operation. Are there any plans to put it back into service? Marc

Out of curiosity, has anyone on the forum built a Nick Feast Q1? Cheers Charley Well I'm onto my third one, but it is my design!! Hah! Was over at the MEX at Sandown for two days, saw one on the stand of the NLSME, wondered if it was one of Mr. Feast's brethren. Maybe "Charley" can say for sure. ;-) Have hopes to build one, (actually, two) but life and making a new CNC mill got in the way. The new mill is not quite long enough to mill the main frames out, but it'll do the tender, and the drawings for frames, wheels etc are already redrawn into CAD. I like Nick Feast's design, and I like the size - not too big, not too small. I *love* his sense of humour that comes through in the pages of the ME writeup. Hoped to build two boilers last summer; maybe this coming summer?? (I've built 5 copper boilers so far, have another one to do, and thought that, when I was in copper boiler building mode, I'd throw in the Q1 boilers. It *does* take a change of attitude, at least by me) (No, my name is NOT Helen Wirral) Oh to be retired and be able to dedicate more than an hour or two per week to the workshop... John.

John,
Thanks for your comments. Up here in the wilds of Strathaven South Lanarkshire we get visiting loco's from Motherwell and in Oct an annual two day event where a larger number of clubs visit so I've never seen one apart from websites or Articles so I wouldn't be able to tell yours apart from a Nick Feast design. Think it's an interesting prototype and I like the "no frills" approach. Hope the builds go well.

What makes you think that being retired will give you lots of workshop time (workshop time doing what you want to do, anyway) People thought that when I was retired I would need to be given things to do to keep me occupied, so much so that I still didn't get much 'me' time in the workshop. Got so bad that I've gone back to work part time. Just as much workshop time and some extra dosh to spend on 'toys'.

Hah! What makes you think that being retired will give you lots of workshop time ... Talk about deflating one's hopes and wishes! I think that if/when I ever get to retire, I'll not tell anyone. (ok, I'll tell my wife, but that's it!) John.

Well done to all involved. She looks great and I can't wait to see a video of her in action. Can't help but remark those the cardinal similarities between a 4F and this. Cheers Marc

here's a youtube clip (not mine!) of the Q in steam probably the same day as Ben's lovely pic above. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYNYTMeHgzg&t=834not too sure about the feeble whistle! no doubt it will get adjusted properly very soon. shunting the C class 0-6-0 loco without cab you can see new stays fitted to the firebox, and a big lump out of the front top of the chimney. the BR standard being shunted is 'Camelot', and for Brit builders the reverser screw mechanism is exposed (not often seen) cheers, julian

bambuko has very kindly in the last day or so added a 'liked' to one of my posts on this thread.
it is one of the most interesting valve gear discussions (i think) especially as it has as much relevance in miniature as fullsize.
unfortunately all of Ben Weatherall's posts have disappeared from this thread which makes it a bit disjointed. Ben provided much valuable info on this thread from his knowledge of the fullsize locos of Maunsell Q and Bulleid Q1.
cheers, julian

I wasn't going to post in this thread (in the modern interweb slang "thread necromancy" being frowned upon), but I couldn't resist liking both the topic and some of the comments, although as you say - it was rather difficult to follow...
