Ahh thanks for the link. If you think about it, they would be the ideal first loco for a small heritage railway; economical, simplex, easier to restore maybe and steams up very quickly. I really would love to build a sentinel loco 5" ; the idea is simple. Chassis with two axles. Both have cogs on . The engine turns a main cog instead of flywheel, transmits power to wheels. Water tank inbetween engine and cab. Cab has boiler, then everything housed in a detailed replicate of the smaller sentinel locos. I could even just leave out valve gear; if i want to go forward I push it forward, and backward I push its backwards. It would be the simplest of locos Marc

Hello Marc, This is a gauge 1 version of an LBSC O gauge "Diesel" design. Not really my thing but good workmanship none the less, let it be said! Of course, you'd have added complication eg. feed-water, springing, draughting etc. to think about on a coal-fired passenger hauler but I hope it gives you some ideas to bounce around... www.santacruzlumberco.com/MLS_PDFs/LBSC1930sDiesel.pdfRegards, James.

Hmm.. is it indeed very interesting. Something to think about, thanks. I should be starting on my 10V build soon, wish me luck! It's going to be my first bit of turning, milling etc... I still have a desire to make a sentinel out of it; I'll update this thread if I see anything worth it. Marc

Ahh that would be great! I love sentinels, the lorries to. Maybe in a decades time I might build a clayton lorry... for the moment I'll stick to the locos; really want to build this sentinel loco, just like the fry's one Marc

Is it still there? I think it was used by Perkins Engines when I worked in Shrewsbury in the late 1980s. We were building the inner link road, which involved re-excavating a railway cutting on Bell Lane, which had been used as a rubbish tip in the 1950s. Local legend had it that quite a lot of stuff from Sentinels had been dumped there. I watched that part of the work very closely, but never saw anything of interest! An old man also told me he had dumped an MG sports car in there, but I never saw that either! The tip was quite dry, you could find a newspaper from the 50s, quite readable when dug up, but after it had been exposed to the air for a couple of hours, it just crumbled to dust. Richard

As far as I know it still is-----------anyone from Shrewsbury on this forum who might be able to tell us ?----I remember the inner link road being built......I suspect that the railway cutting you re-excavated might have been the remnants of the old Severn Valley Railway line as it entered Shrewsbury..........just a hunch, that's all..

No, it was the link from the Potteries Junction on the LNWR line to the Shropshire and Montgomeryshire line, near Abbey Foregate.

Just found this >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Yes, the section we excavated was that dotted line from the LNWR Shrewsbury-Wellington line. Abbeyforgate was still in use as an oil terminal then, though I think it has a supermarket on it now.

Here's a young Hagley on a 7.25"gauge Castle....The tender is the 8 wheeled, double bogie type as fitted to The Great Bear......Behind the fence was the remnants of the oil terminal area....and you can just see part of the Abbey behind us.....The private railway was/is ? in the grounds of a local company and the tracks ran straight through the building with a spur up to the pavement outside......I believe that it's still there------will have to ride over there one day armed with my Aldi camera !!------------------------------------------------

I am sure I have seen a recent picture of some 7 1/4 rails set in the road around the abbey in Shrewsbury so I presume it was this. Very interesting.

Very interesting. --------------------------------------------------------- can you find them and post them on here perhaps ??......In that photo I posted the spur off to the right went through the main works and terminated at 90 degrees to the public pavement that passed by the front of this company....The track was set into the tarmac at this point and was under an archway, and off-set to the left as viewed from the outside...........That pavement and main road is immediately behind the stone wall that's behind myself and the GWR Castle...... with the Abbey just across on the other side...

i feel a bit guilty about hi jacking this thread about Sentinel locos into a discussion about railways in Shrewsbury, so here goes to make amends. I seem to remember that there was a Sentinel loco (might have been two) standing derelict near the Abraham Darby furnaces at the Ironbridge Gorge museum. Anybody know if they are still there?
