If what you have got works I would stick with it and buy the DC power supply.

I think Chester are still trading so it may be worth giving them a call and seeing if they have any capacitors in stock.

Bore a hole in the correct place large enough to remove evidence of your misplaced hole and just turn the crank pin from larger sized material. Loctite pin in wheel and jobs done. Hole needs boring though, drills and even slot drills will wander depending on rigidity of your mill, if you are doing it on something larger than a Bridgeport you can ignore that comment.

Yes loads of drawings for 5 inch kings, Keith Wilson done a king, if I remember correctly dear old LBSC done a king in 2 1/2 gauge, I believe it was called kingette, must have been a watchmaking job doing the two inside cylinders but as far as I know only the one in 3.5 gauge,

Just googled Docksteader valve gear simulator and reading the blurb it says Windows XP will unzip the files, I don’t know much about computers, or anything else come to that but maybe find someone still using XP.

.....The Station Road Steam website has a superb version of the Doug Hewson model for sale, so if you have £13950 down the back of the sofa. Just checked the back of the sofa, couple of buttons, half a dozen sweet wrappers and 47 pence in change, looks like I can’t afford to buy it at the moment.

You were lucky with the lazy Suzan bearing being the right size, these bearings also make great turntables for spray painting. I love the motor and gearbox, I must have a look on Ali Express I need a couple for an upcoming project.

How about fabricating it in brass, no rusting problems, silver solders beautifully.

I agree totally with Roger, given half a chance they will wander all over the place, if possible I tend to use a thin side and face cutter as they tend to be a bit stiffer.

Welcome Martin, Chub is a good first loco and plenty of people here to help you out if you need it.

Seems strange to me that the shroud has a five thou tolerance on it when it fits in to a 9/32 un toleranced hole.

Good question, I was wondering myself where I could get some, I couldn’t make the Midlands show so not aware that they weren’t there, are Signal Fuels still trading? I was thinking of going to my local coal merchant and trying to get anthracite beans or grains as used in the solid fuel hopper fed stoves. I have an open fire and use the smokeless stuff, Homefire eco 50 or whatever and although it burns reasonably well in the grate it is very wasteful breaking it up into bits small enough for a loco, it’s a bit too cold and wet at the moment to get a loco outside and play around steaming it to see how it burns.

Many thanks for your reply Chris, just purchased a couple of cans of Upol #8 Acid etch primer, tomorrow I shall get some cellulose thinners and a box of disposable gloves so I can give everything a final degreasing and keep the greasy fingerprints off. Hopefully I will get some painting done before year end.

Sorry for hijacking your post Chrisb but I am doing a very similar thing to a 30 year old Polly 2 loco, the boiler had to come out of the frames because the boiler inspectors insisted on seeing it in the flesh and the valve gear was rattling so time for a bit of TLC. I have stripped everything back to bare metal and have got some etch primer for all the brass bits, tender water tank, boiler cleading etc but I wonder if someone could advise as to the best way to proceed with the black steel frames and other steel and iron parts, I don’t want to put the frames in brick cleaner to remove the black scale due to the hornblocks being attached and the stuff seeping in to any gaps and causing problems later so should I use a red oxide primer or etch primer on the black mild steel, and what should I use as a base or primer on the cast iron and bright steel bits. Painting is a bit out of my comfort zone, I am far happier at the lathe making swarf.
