Worked out a possible fitting for the DRO on the back of the Big Mill!

Sunday, 27th}----- No photos alas but finished-off a few items found during the Chester lathe's recent saddle gearbox repairs......One such repair needed was to the carriage handwhheel, which had a large crack in one of its' two main cast-iron spokes............
Removing the hub proved very time-consuming as it was secured to the shaft by a long roll-pin....This had become partially rusted in and gainfully fought it's "Extradition" orders right up to the last hammer clout !!..........Some Brazing, re-designing the dial read-out along with overal re-painting and it's now back in harness giving good feed-back when turning etc......
In the Headstock is a rudimentary form of bearing lubrication........The oil passageways are full of paint flecks etc and need cleaning out..

If you enjoy tidying your workshop you could come do mine... Hi matey !!--------First, my congrats on the forthcoming Wedding etc.......I bet those 30 in a small pub will be a great time !!---especially after a few "rounds" are in !! Ah, now then----- workshop cleaning ??.....What I really meant to say is}-- "Enjoy that by comparison"...to the Housework.......At least I can get distracted whilst in the Workshop, not-so whilst in the house.... Just for info}--- Joyce and I live in our own, separate houses but go out together quite a lot----Dancing again at the British Legion Club last night for example.....So I'm responsible for my own "Part of ship" as it were....Like myself she's also Ex-MoD having been a main Storekeeper at ABRO Donnington**, Telford for 20-odd years...( It's where we met by the way.. )..................** Previously known as}---32 Base REME, Donnington. OK---I'll do yours at an MoD "Mates Rates" of £20 / Hr -- min of 8hrs, OK ??........Travel, overnight accomodation , Breakfast, Dinner and Beer Tokens are extra...That's for 2 as she counts as my Personal Secretary .... PS}--- When are you going to eat that dammed avatar Snorker ??.....LoL !!

If you are building a new workbench, it can be made much easier if you build brick or concrete columns instead of timber ones, and then put a wooden top to the columns for the bench top to be screwed onto. This is how I made mine, and it has stood 50 years of hard use. Of cause it is a permanent one, as it is not possible to move it, once made.
best wishes

Just a couple of oddities whilst putting the Chester lathe back together}--- 1) Here's the finished main carriage wheel on the right .. The silver paint in place of the chrome plate is by Wurth --- ( www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wurth-German-Alloy-Silver-Wheel-Spray-Paint-Refurb/273645811940?epid )
2) These "Windows" are for setting the oil level in the headstock bearings .......They are cheapie plastic and one was cracked........removal by thin screwdriver blade... Crack turned out to be actually broken so glued back using Airfix cement !!.......New, supple "o" ring to replace the hardened original seal......File a short taper in the hole to help o-ring engage........Re-fit, fill with light, hydraulic oil and check for leaks.........OK !!
Exit machine shop at 22.00 Hrs .............. Tomorrow sees the rest of the headstock assy re-built and fitted .. Electric motor and control cubicle then test-turn something !!

Return to house to mark out extra holes round the cylinder blocks for their mounting plates as per the Class 2 and Black Five ones! Not tidied the house Post Tax Return! Cant find the hole punch? No not Gaskets paperwork of what I have spent! Rang them up and a small question got a look at last years and some money returning!!! What a Lovely day. Contacted HSBC but still couldn't get accepted as me impossible with Lily?? So 8 mile journey to an UNCLOSED BRANCH!!! Come on it is £7.00 to visit the main on in Reading.

And the daft thing is the Branch building is virtually right outside the MoD main base gates and also within the middle of the main housing estate that supplies the bulk of staff to the base...... Unbelievable!! And yes, that's the very same Newport that The Hon. Leader of Her Majesty's Opposition went to school !! ( Other leaders are potentially available )

Move to another bank, but leave a few pence in the account, and ask them for a posted statement every month, that's what I do when a bank becomes difficult or bolshy.

I had a lovely little off-settable tailstock gadget on my old EW. It replaced the tailstock barrel itself and had a very neat sliding centre on the end. The tailstock locking screw kept it horizontal. It went when I upgraded to the Myford and I really miss it for turning things like tapered handrails. I tried using my boring head in the tailstock with a centre in one of the tool stations, but it was clumsy and got in the way of the top slide and tool holder. I must get around to making one.... Have you got any pictures of yours? Malcolm

Well, to-day didn't quite pan-out as expected !! Having replaced the R/H 0 ring in the oil level indicator yesterday, the L/H promptly decided to throw its' Teddy out of the pram and started to leak as well this morning...........At least this time I had the camera ready}------------
I took the oppertunity to modify the filler plugs that are situated inside the headstock body.....

Sorry Malcolm I don't have any photos as I don't have a photo account. I don't trust them, The behaviour of the ones used regularly on here have only reinforced my mistrust. It is very simple , just a morse taper into the tail stock with a block on the end that has a dovetail way cut in it. The centre mounts on a block that can be st forwards or backwards of the centre held in place by knurled knobs on threaded rod. It will offset 10mmin either direction of the centre. It is my version of the many that you can see on the Internet. Some of them with nice price tags. The only thing that makes it a bit different is that it has wings that rest on either side of the tail stock as insurance against rotation. The tail stock is a bit basic and I don't trust the morse taper not to loosen at some critical point when I'm machining.

Possibly---- but this one invariably had a queue of some sorts at most times of the day......usually older persons and / or local business people depositing cash.... "You'd better swim now----or you'll sink like a stone, for the times they are a-changing" Now where have we heard that before ?
