Yes... Gardening to rid us of another mass of soil. I gave in and got a shredder as they now charge for filling the green bin. This is going round the back to store water when the NORTH WEST PASSAGE through the garage can be found! So cut back a mass of bushes, clean out the black sludge from the pond under it. I have seen bigger puddles. This was left to dry out with the rest of us from thursday!!!! And will be bunged in the dustbin every other week. Then use another impressive bit of kit the KANGO breaker. Hard sub soil just melts before it. Then fill the pond having lifted the liner. The remaining water bunged in the toilet until it blocked. Huge problem with the Eucalyptus tree next door. Ponds under do not work. Ponds have to be big to achieve a balance.
Now far too tired to do any models for the rest of the day.
David and Lily.
Oh and we are in Model Engineer again under Reading. Motion Brackets for Jessie.

Last night on a YouTube check found that K1 is back in steam! YES!!!! I had found out a while back that she has been moved to Statfold Barn Railway & was going to be reassembled & put on static display. The guys there did an assessment & decided that she could be put back to steam! As far as I’m concerned this is GREAT news! Here’s a link... youtu.be/lyEUlTnPOS8Anybody interested in narrow gauge locos it’s worth a YouTube search for Stafold Barn as there are some wonderful locos in steam! Now to start saving my penny’s for a visit! Cheers Kerrin

Hi Kerrin, Sorry, but I believe that a visit to Statfold Barn is by invitation only..........I'd check on that before you commit yourself to any long distance travel etc... Update}--- Apparently that applies for the special open days.......Looks like there is usually a programme of events for the general Public as well... ----------- www.statfold.com/ ---------

A bit more work on the water bowser project..........Here, the newly re-vamped small miller is being used to machine final length and final width to the 4 vertical beams....... Later these will be attached to 4 hinges at the bottom and 2 cross beams at the top...

More improvements for my Super Simplex, I have made a couple of filters for the tank fillers, hopefully will stop any debris entering the tanks whilst filling with water. These are the parts for the second one before assembly and the completed first one. A brass turned top ring and some bronze mesh rolled into a cylinder with a dished end cap. I made a simple former to press the end caps into a conveniently sized 'cup' I found in the scrap bin. Here's a view of the bottom showing the end cap in place. And the filter in situ in the filler neck. Chris D

Neat soldering----- how did you achieve that ??.........
Over the years the worst thing I've seen coming from a club water tank was a dead earwig !!..........During a hot Summer the usual items are bits of grit, grass seeds, flies, or stagnant water in some cases....yes, that's a good thing to have fitted to your water tanks ( or tender filler for that matter )..

Hi, I just used baker fluid painted on regularly during heating and soldering, I use lead free solder without flux core, just heat the part gently locally and touch the solder on, then use a paint brush with baker fluid to allow the solder to flow where required. I use a small self contained gas torch with a fine point flame which helps keep the heat directed where I want it. Chris D

I need to get a small burner. I currently use a blowlamp for everything which obviously means I lack finesse on smaller jobs.

I once managed to suck an earwig into the vacuum pipe on Lyn.... took a fair bit of dismantling to get it out!

I was in Duisburg and visited Wilson and his father. Good to see how the bogie is made On the table a friends engine they want to put together again. That is an unusual but robust looking coupling rod arrangement The engine is made after Workdrawings.

Placed the order for the metal for my son's first locomotive build today; the Wild Rose III in 16mm gauge. Should be a fun little build and I think he will learn some great skills from it.

Sounds a great Project nobbysideways Start young and enjoy.
It is getting a great set of drawings for your chosen project. Cheap castings turned up and a TWIN HA HA To my Jinty began. Yes Butch is a nice Locomotive but there is something not quite Fowler 2F about her. Yes Twin Sisters as the cylinder block and wheels are the same size.
Carefully mark out from the dimensions a simple Buffer beam or two. The big problem is that the model is to 1 inch to the foot except for the width of the angle bolts. Moving the buffer stocks out to 1 1/16 inch scale and making them wider sorts out the problem. A lovely set of Borrowed drawings BUT they are strangely dimensioned. The solution is of course do a re draw. Join the queue among the others. The Boiler drawing is useless and would you set out with a flangeless backplate?
No wonder they are RARE BEASTS.
The other part of the day we washed some gravel for the path round the workshop extension. I sometimes feel like an ant moving stuff round the garden and Garage on every journey. Doing it now while I have best access round the back. The other bits carried are the Lightweight blocks for floor supports over the whole area 8 feet by 8 feet. Getting urgent now the weather is getting wetter.

You must be very proud of him and rightly so.

Peter
He was also om HMS Nile a Concrete ship in Alexandria for a few years as MP or as he called The Royal Navy Ragulating Branch so he saw her and several others of the class doing the Malta runs He was a stoker 1st class To me to go from there to Russia IS a change of climate His Africa Star now next to his Arctic one. His claim to fame was when KGVI was on board her and Dad and another stoker were up on deck near the carpenters stores out of the way for a quick ciggie when KGVI came unannounced all bulled up to be met by two Hands wearing nothing but the boiler suit opened to the navel . HE wss that surprised by these two jumping to attention with the salute that Dad said his stutter came back and it took him 30 seconds for him to say c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-carry on, he said his arm was beginning to ache holding the salute. He missed out on the signing of the peace agreement on board her as he was on honeymoon. He really loved that ship, and went all dewy eyed when he saw a model of her on the Belfast. On a Navy Day at Chatham ( IIRC) F104 was in and he made a beeline for her with me in tow. Casually !! mentioned he was on her predecessor and was given VIP treatment not only by the ERA but the officers, and we went where the rest of the public were off limits. They even got the Rum Fanny out so he could have a look so it must have been 70 or 71. He was rat=arsed by the time he came ashore Had his stokers badge and his housewife fo years but they got lost when they moved.Keep ooking on ebay for a replacement The model will be as long as the B17!!! If thewew are any ex RN on here i can send them a link about life in the Grey Funnel line in the 90s bloody good dits

Hello there silverfox.........yes please to me via a PM (Ex-ERA 'Tiffy )......I still have my Blundell drawing instruments and used some of them when researching and drawing The Bear's Boiler..........Housewife disappeared soon after de-mob ( A portent of things to come in civvy street it seems ) but my No8's lasted for a good 5 or 6 years out in the workshop....My Brother-in-law's father-- the late Don Parsons---- was also on the Russian convoys but never talked about it....
Yes Peter.......I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments...

Whose arm doth bind the restless wave........"
