Thought i would share this image of my Hielan Lassie restoration/rebuild, first time on its wheels in 40 years. Hello John, Loco's looking good--------- Is that a home-made tapping tool seen there ??

Gents, thanks for the interest in my homemade tapping stand. Made from scrap bits found in my stash. The alloy upright welded to a collar by a friend. The main joint found in a skip, think its from a old photo enlarger or maybe a bench microscope. This joint allows movement and locking in two axis thus i can tap at an angle, as shown in the staged photo. Daggers

Always pays to keep an eye on the local skip trade. I keep a small ladder for the tricky high sided variety. We all have to do our bit for recycling - that's my excuse anyway!

Hello glynmar, Re}--- 8 wheel tender... As far as I know there were only 2 locos that had an 8-wheel tender with the axleboxes on the inside}---- a) The GWR 4-6-2 The Great Bear b) The LSWR 4-4-0 T9 and of these the Bear's were arranged on two fore-shortened loco bogies, whilst the T9's were 4 separate axles..... If you let me know your tender wheel diameter ( on the tread please ) and the wheel pitch within the bogie then I can compare that with mine......My guess is it won't be that far off in difference........The bogies are a shortened version of the GWR standard de-glehn loco bogie....Malcolm High has already produced the bogie top-plate and compensating beams for me so he will have the cutting template dimentions on file.... Yes, mine also works out at over 6ft long !!.......and like you I also had produced a special bench only for it to be gobbled up by No.111. Stevand123 added After Great Bear's conversion to a Castle three different Churchward "County" 4-4-0's were for a time connected to the eight wheel tender, 3802, 3804 and 3816.

Itβs been a few weeks since I posted so here is some progress. I have been making a lot of small bits like the valve chest , valve spindle, eccentric and sheave. I am on attempt 3 for piston and rod, first one went extremely well until I mistook a dimension and cut the rod too short. Second attempt sheared the rod as I was trying to final turn the piston. I am now waiting for a drill blank for the next attempt. I am still struggling with accuracy and finish on some of the parts. Kevan

You are doing grand Kevan, if it was easy everyone would be doing it.
I stupidly rushed a hole I was supposed to tap to 10BA yesterday, and instead of drilling it to the tapping size I drilled it clearance.... all because I was rushing to finish what I was doing before tea...

Welcome to the club !!........... How will you repair it ??.......JB Weld is good stuff if you don't want to use a heat-based process.....I've tapped 6BA and it held up when applied to a handrail stanchion on a GRP Diesel body ...

Lily is 36 again so we had a Do Nothing day. Cake at lunch time. And a lovely walk down to the Thames and along for some sunny exercise. Or help settle the cake. I didn't look at trains on the Main Line as we crossed!! And No trains on You Tube.

...Last photo shown on repro signalman's cloth... One thing this website is terrible for; showing me things I don't need, shouldn't buy, and will probably be purchased next time I've had a beer and stray online.

Made a slitting saw arbour today. My old one had jammed and I could not get it apart and then I did get it apart but destroyed it in the process, good at that. So tomorrow will be a sawing day. D

To-day has been spent trying to finally fit the new 4-jaw chuck backplate onto my Boxford lathe register........Initially it would only advance approx 2/3 the required distance.......Reversing it showed that there was a slight taper at one end......My other lathe ( Chester Craftsman ) which could have taken the size quite comfortably is tied-up with another job so it had to be done the old fashioned way -----------BY HAND !!! First I needed a tool that could fit into the Vee-thread and be operated by yours-truly......Although I have several indexible boring bars of varying sizes I found a small, brazed-tip one that fitted the bill............Some deft work on the grinding wheel gave a nice, long pointed end and a surplus, large file handle completed the job.... Next, using a black, felt tip pen I divided the backplate's circumference into 4 equal sectors and numbered them 1,2,3 & 4.... Placing the plate into the 6 inch bench vice with No.1 uppermost I could see 3 threads on the inside, lower area...these I proceeded to scrape through approx 90 degrees...giving each thread 10 movements....So that's 10 x 3 threads x 4 quarters = 120 movements per one rotation of the plate.... Air blast to clean it and check on the lathe's register..... Just a wee bit forwards so back to the vice and repeat the process.... This went on for several hours untill it finally went fully home onto the shoulder.....Next was to mark-out and drill the 4 holes for the securing cap head screws and then final skim, fit the chuck and test run..... I'll put a clock on it to-morrow and final adjust...... My wrist hurts and I fear I may have cranker's wamp !!

Lovely NEW CHUCK Alan! But do remember if you ever sell it on ebay the chuck key needs to be at 12.00 O Clock!!!
Having tried the bits on the inner frames of my version of Asia Europa 54. I discovered the rear slab a bit big fortunately. It showed up in the Photograph.
Lily finds it funny when I do A (I have messed it up again GROAN) and quoit's the usual "ITS NOT BIG ENOUGH!!" Quickly sorted out this time thankfully.
The rest of the time was spent filing wheel spokes. Such an incentive to find something to do that is more exciting.
Our other neighbour has a skip till Tuesday so we filled it up with some odd bits and pieces. Funny story about a log covered in Ivy he wanted to keep a bit of for bugs. There is such a moment when you realize that the coverage of IVY is hiding a fence post of the concrete variety. Poor blade.
David and Lily.
