Keeping COOL. Coldest place was in the workshop and Insulation does pay off. Also high rated windows. But by 2.30 we grabbed the fan. More regulator parts and a decision to add a stick on housing for the end of the stainless rod. This will get it in the right place. Drilled and tapped and later screwed in place. The body was looking a bit thin and close to breaking into the steam passage. Got the bits ready for our Club ZOOM MEETING tonight. Then it was down to getting the lighting and the camera in the right positions.
One important bit was to letter and number stamp our POST CODE onto several more bits. Not saying which bits but best to make a photographic note of where they are even if they are filled in and hidden under paint.
David and Lily.

The case for the signal box instrument is finished and just needs varnishing. I have started by varnishing the top using Ronseal mahogany varnish. The face is mocked up using a laminated print. The next stage to make the face from a thin sheet of steel. Signal instrument by GL5Keith1500, on Flickr

Forgive my ignorance, but how will the instrument indicate the trains status? Guy

Fair question. Thank you for your interest. The principle will be similar to the real thing. A solenoid shifts a panel behind the slots to show the writing. At the same time a bell rings drawing the status to the attention of the signalman, but that’s only if the signal is ON. Signal instrument by GL5Keith1500, on Flickr

Hi, pleased to report that the Butterley Park Miniature Railway re-opened today, carrying its first passengers since the end of the 2019 season! More running tomorrow....
Cheers Don

Yes that’s the general idea. I am waiting on a 24v solenoid which will be the same type my club have used for operating the semaphore signals ( keeps spares to a minimum) I’ll make a start with the face plate and slider and then work out how to operate it with the solenoid.
I’ll update as I go.

Compressor for a tenner😲 Yesterday and today I built this. Compressor came out of a fridge that I just scrapped, the tank left over from a party, the bits out of the pressure switch safety valve regulator and pressure gauge £9.34 from eBay!

I bet that’s fairly quiet if the compressor is from a fridge?

Had my first run with Rastus the Great today ay Fareham. Some good tuition from Conniston then let loose on my own. Very pleased with how it went. The loco steams like a witch which helps and the injector is 100% reliable. Managed to do multiple laps without any blow ups. Looking forward to its next outing already. This morning at about 1.00 AM. I was into my second pint of ABINGDON BRIDGE. Sat of course in the Oxford Clubs Clubhouse at the end of our second day of playing trains. Found the car to sleep in and made it for breakfast.
As on the other 2 mornings the visiting Jessie was in steam and running perfectly even after putting in 14 hours by 2 shattered Young Men the day before. She being quite a special one who had in fact been viewed by Ken Swan himself. 6 wheels all driving? She had then spent 10 years in a box until being let out a week ago. Saturday morning had seen me doing several laps. Best Locomotive and best set of plans to back her up. WOW they are good! Later on Saturday a Blue Jessie joined us. Again faultless.
Today saw more models turn up and it was us being transported back 2 years to normality. We had various rides up to a late lunch where the track cleared and carriages became available. We had run Battery Beast on the Hot Friday so had some Battery left for today. Then there were two of us on the track the 50 keeping equal distance and passing each other with waves and smiles at various points.
Jessie would have gone on to achieve 15 hours today BUT the bodies gave up and they got her ready for home. We defected to Hunslet travel 7 1/4" style and did circuits out into the park. They did an ice cream stop on the far loop and had to back up for a run at the incline the other side. Relaxed chatting and a clear up ended the day with hot sunshine down the Thames Valley.
David and Lily.

I bet that’s fairly quiet if the compressor is from a fridge? So quiet I have to put my hand on it to see if it is actually running! It’s not really any good for air tools but to get an engine running or blow chips away it is perfect !

Almost inaudible and it gets to 100psi no bother! It wasn't less than a tenner though...😈

Yesterday I visited the model engineering society in Yeovil as their newest member. After presenting all my.boilet documentation I was free to go on the track, and spent the day holding everyone up with a locomotive that just refused to steam properly....
A very scenic little railway, very pleasant, and the members made me feel very welcome despite getting in their way all day. Very nice, if a little embarrassing.

It was nice to get it working properly on the inclines, but I really felt the limitations of the smaller boiler

Fridge pumps work very well as air compressors, if a bit slow, they also work very well as vacuum pumps too.

Just found no less than 3 blocked tubes... I don't have that many to spare! No wonder it was asthmatic. I must have been heavy handed with the blower again.

Wet anthracite will explode on contact with a hot fire and go straight to the tube stack. Check the contents of the tubes is the anthracite burnt or unburnt? If unburnt don't be to hard on yourself.
